lol

the thread title and the question in the thread are phrased in such a way that if you answer "yes" or "no" you could be agreeing to the same thing

Independent = YES ... Lets an instructor spend as much time as THEY want with a student and not have to worry about the shop's schedule. My shop encourages independent instructors with special rates etc.. Why not, it increases their potential customer base beyond just their own students.

Is someone thinking of becoming a SSI Instructor?

what agencies do not allow their instructors to work freelance? I think that is a joke! As a freelance flight instructor myself there is no other way to do it!!!

i just fixed the post. the reason i'm asking this is because i've heard of a couple of stories of people getting screwed by instructors that are indpendant.

about 10 years ago a friend of mine who works with me paid 400 dollars to get certafied by a guy who was independent. im not sure how they met, but my friend paid the money, and got the books. the instructor said when you are done with the books, give him a call. about 2 weeks later, my friend tried to give the guy a call and couldnt get a hold of him. he went to the lds to see if they new anything about that guy, and they told him he was a legit instructor for some other agency. he called around and found his home number. no one answered and noone returned his messages. about 2 weeks later, he went back to the dive shop and the dive shop told him that the guy passed away from a heart attack 3 weeks ago. he never got his money back and never finished his ow cert until a year ago.

i know this rarely happens, but i was thinking that an independent instructor has a little less credibility than an instructor with a shop backing them up.

Instructors should not be obligated to teach from a shop. They should be independent contractors who do not need to be overburdened with selling equipments to earn a salary.

What if the instructor feel that the BC the shop owner wants to push on his student is a bad deal? He should be able to say it without jeopardizing his ability to teach.

hmm, I thought that affiliation was required. But in reading all the NO's, I started to think, why should they be? An instructor is a highly qualified guy that completes a number of courses to gain instructor status. I.E. OW, AOW, Rescue, DM, IDC and then the IE. On the other hand, a shop doesnt even have to know how to dive in a bathtub.
The only question I have is wouldnt an instructor have to have access to water? Such as a pool for a certain portion of the course?

Well, there are a lot of independent instructors out there working, so... I would suggest that there are as many stories about shops screwing customers. Just make sure that any given instructor is in good standing with his agency, fully insured, and has been teaching recently in the type of diving that you want. And it never hurts to get references and to be able to watch an instructor in a class situation.
