We are going on a dive trip to fiji for a week and I was wondering if it's better to be safe than sorry and take my passport with me on the dive. I have to admit that I am a little paranoid about someone stealing my passport but at the same time if I'm diving I don't want the possibility of losing it. Any thoughts?
I always bring at least my room key, cash and an ID with me on the dive. I usually just hide the passport somewhere, or I'll just bring it along and leave it on the boat.
Some hotels have safety deposit boxes at the front desk. I've used those in Thailand and the Philippines to store airline tickets visas/passports/cash and any other valuables. Ask about that.
You should be able to leave your valuables with the front desk at most reputable hotels/hostels. I usually travel using budget accomodations (under $100.00 a day) and I have never had anything stolen from my hotel rooms. I think you may be being overly cautious in your thinking. But, if that is your nature then just get a small drybox thats lockable and bring it on the boat..
Here in the Philippines where I live, things sometimes go missing after the "victim" invites an unscrupulous visitor back to the room for some late night companionship... So common-sense should rule the day...
I do this whenever I leave the country. Only I take it a step further, I have copies of all of my credit cards and drivers license and I also have a copy of them scanned on my computer. I email them to myself and keep a copy stored in my "sent" folders. Might sound crazy but it makes me feel better.
Might be useful if on your person in a sealed bag, and Cameron's Diaz mega-grouper decides to swallow you whole...
Kidding aside - use your smartphone with flash off, under a good light (sunlight is best) and take a clear picture.
Do the same with your drivers license.
Leave the original at the hotel or in your room.
