I don't know what the "normal" is, but when I was in college, I had a student health service available to me during term, but nothing during the summer. I had the misfortune to break a leg during summer break, and had to pay all the bills myself.

I don't disapprove of someone trying to decide if a problem is bad enough to see a doctor about. That's responsible use of health care, and if everybody used a little judgment, a lot of health-care related problems in this country would not be as bad as they are.
