I'd be arriving at LAX on 30th July. Looking at doing at a day or two of diving on the Wednesday or Thursday.

Is there any boat dives going out on Wednesdays or Thursdays ? Mainly I want to see the kelp forests.

Most of these have schedules on their websites - California Dive Boats : The Official Page

not sure how many are a month out. Your best bet is probably someone going to the Northern Channel Islands or maybe Catalina, Most list the Kelp dives separately but anything to Anacapa Island is a possibility. I don't know of anyone doing that as a day trip though.

If you don't mind a drive, Lois Ann or probably Waterhorse Charters could be divng the Point Loma Kelp beds then also. About 3+ hours to San Diego depending on the trafic thru Orange County.

The LA boats mostly leave from Long Beach/San Pedro or the Ventura/Santa Barbara to the north - which could be a 2 hr drive with traffic. Get an LA traffic app - some have real time updates. Any freeway going past downtown LA will likely be a parking lot most mornings. Sometimes into Long Beach/San Pedro also - it's the regional container port.

There's also a Possibility at Los Coronados Islands -there at least if there's no kelp, the Sea Lions will provide the entertainment. Waterhorse goes there and handles the day Visa since it's Mexico. I believe you'll need to bring your Passport also. If they are going, I might get a cheap room near the harbor and overnight the night b4 - they could be leaving as early as 4am - it's a pretty long ride south. Could be a 2 day trip also - likely on the weekend

You;re not going to have a lot of options W-TH - some boats don't work TH to prep for the long weekend trios - Fri-Sun is pretty common

check with drbill here on SB - he's a marine biologist and lives on Catalina and will have an idea of whether i's worth the trip out there. Some years the Kelp is sparse everywhere.

If you don't find a boat, you could always take the ferry to Catalina and dive off Casino Point. With the stairs they put in, it's as easy an entry as a boat dive, and you jump right into the kelp forests. Cost for a round-trip ferry ticket plus parking at the ferry departure port plus renting tanks and weights on the island is comparable to a 3-dive trip on a day boat.

There is only 1 dive operator out of Santa Barbara and they have 3 boats and none of them can accommodate your dates. They mostly run multi-day day trips (Truth Aquatics). Out of Ventura, the Spectre Dive Trips | The Spectre Dive Boat has a day trip going out on Thursday, August 1st that coincides with one of your 2 desired dates. This will go to Anacapa or Santa Cruz island for the day and you will be diving in kelp. If you could do Thursday and Friday instead, you could get back to back days on the Spectre.
The Raptor out of Ventura only goes out weekends and the occasional weekday or can be chartered by a group of 8 or more any day of the week. They are not running on your desired days. The Explorer out of Ventura has been up for sale and may have sold. They have not updated their website calendar and they are only a weekend boat also.

fyi generally in SoCal the DM stays on the boat. You can probably find someone to buddy with or hire a guide thru the boat.

Looks like Spectre boat is the best option for Thursday and Friday. Bit of a drive, I'll have to get a rental car most likely.

Is the diving generally fairly comparable across the different locations up and down the coast ?
