The pattern is seven waves, ...

In my experience it's not always 7 (I've seen as low as 4 and as high as 9) and sometimes there are several waves in a row where it's nearly imposible to tell which is biggest.

For Bonaire diving I've often thought about leaving an underwater exit marker of some sort and/or leaving sandals, but I am concerned that if for some reason I can't find it then I have just left trash in the ocean.

I always head straight out to the drop. If I left it on that line, at the drop it should be easy to find. If I couldn't find it on the way back I could snorkle back out or use the last 500 psi to go back and retrieve it. Also a flashing blue light should be pretty obvious. I'm going to try it up here (upstate NY) to see how difficult it is when I'm doing multiple dives in the same place.
