Hey. I'm currently living (working) in NC. I'm originally from Plant City, but haven't lived in Florida for over 20 years. Because of a recent trip to Sydney, AU (10 months worth of trip,) I discovered Diving.

I'm actually looking forward to moving back to Florida within the next year, and currently looking at the Ft Myers area.

Can anyone let me know of some good shore diving spots along the west coast? Specifically within the Ft Myers area?

Cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin! Shore diving in the Ft Myers area (lee county in particular) is quite a scarey prospect. Other than some areas near Sanibel/Captiva, I've not found a place I feel totally comfortable diving without a rifleman standing watch on the shore to keep boaters at bay.

My dives are to the north approximately an hour in Sarasota County where boat intrusion is far less common. Favorite entry points so far are North Englewood Beach, Rocky Point, and the infamous Venice Beach.

According to my wife (who dive AUS in '99), the diving around here isn't totally spectacular like the GBR, but its inexpesive and fun! Hope to see you out soon!

Colin, Thanks for that information. I honestly hadn't even considered the boats as an issue. Most of areas that I dived in Sydney had absolutely no boat traffic.

And the areas that did have the traffic had buoys to follow that kept them out of our path.

I take it, however, from your response that boaters don't respect the dive flag here?

I'll be sure to do that. I'm planning on coming down before the new year to just take a look around. Of course, I'll have to bring my gear as well. ;)

I'll post something just prior to heading out.

Lets just say that my last dive was a close encounter of the propeller kind.

Rumor has it (confirmed by a few sources) that Walter is THE man for local shore dive knowlege and then some! I'll be off during that time frame as well and am always up to a dive. :)
