Leaving in a week...how are the shore diving conditions on Maui? Any predictions of storms stirring things up the first week of August?

I just found this site today also - http://hawaiiweathertoday.com/content.php?pid=13 for brief shore diving conditions...
When doing a lot of shore diving last Dec-March I often looked at that site. It was pretty accurate on diving conditions for S. Maui.

http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/Products/SRF.php is oriented towards surfers and primarily Oahu, but it's good for the long range forecast, since they are monitoring the effect of storms all the way from New Zealand up to the Aleutians and Kurils.

I've been off-island for a week now (won't return till Monday) so I can't speak for the water conditions, but the weather report looks good - http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/weather/index.html

Aloha, Tim

Maybe Send a PM to Shaka Doug - he would be the most "in-tune" with the shore conditions

Tim,
When they say dive conditions are 'marginal', what do you suspect that means in terms of viz? Your marginal is our great :)

"Good" on that website seemed to translate to about 50' viz.

"Marginal" generally seems to translate to about 20' viz.

Poor translates to sharing the dive spot with boogie boarders and surfers. "Poor" also means that it's a good day to hop a boat out to Molokini or Lanai instead ---- even on days that have rotten viz inshore, it's common for Molokini to be 100+' since it's out in the middle of the channel. The island of Lanai is also mostly hard lava with very little sand and runoff, so the viz there stays pretty good.

Mornings are almost always better than the afternoon.

You can make a pretty good guess at dive conditions by just remembering what the surf has been doing for the last 12 to 24 hours. Most of the reduction in viz is due to surf stirring up things, and it takes most of a day to settle back down or get carried away.

Some of the dive shops will have guys that can tell you about current conditions. Ask when you rent tanks ... often they will have gotten a report from earlier divers.
