i'm thinking about adding a shock cord to the shooting line of my JBL 450, having lost 2 shafts due to the reel line breaking. The reel I'm using doesn't have a drag system.
What's the best setup for this.

Thank for your help.

rhigh,
I don't do reel. My spear line attach to my gun and then my gun to a float line for small fishes like YT or such. Or I use a Hawaiian break away from my spear line to the float line for tuna.

You can go over www.spearboard.com and they have tons of articles about line setup.

Before You Give Up On The Reel, What Kind Of Line Are You Using?

I use 250 # black mono as the shooting line. 3 wraps on the gun and looped and crimped with 1/8" braided reel line tied to the shooting line. The last 2 breaks were on the reel line. Both times hit big grouper and bing there goes another shaft.

Sounds Like The Gun Is Rigged Well And Should Hold Up To The Stress You Are Describing. If The Reel Line Is Not New, How Old Is It? Maybe Try A Different Brand. I Have Never Used A Reel So I Am Not Knowledgeable About The Different Types. Adding A Shock Cord To Your Rig Could Not Hurt And May Reduce The Amount Of Stress Put On The Reel.

If the fish bolts for the rocks/ledge and rocks up and you are pulling on the line as you ascend that line may break if it is not a good line. I like a 400 lb mono on a wrap line, but the 250 should be fine, unless you are rig diving. That's whole 'nother setup.

As shock cord is mostly for aiding in re-wrapping a line on the gun, not to stop line breakage from a fish jerk. What line is on your reel and the strength rating in lbs.?

You line diameter of 1/8" or about 2mm is what most guys use, but nylon material is secondary to kevlar. It's more expensive, but so are shafts. I also would not crimp it but instead use a quick release swivel and run the reel line through a ring on the muzzle to help the line shock and re-loading.

Johnoly, I think I will replace the reel line and go try it this weekend.
Thanks,
