people have been telling me that the 10w are a thing of the past and the 18w hids are the norm. i just have never seen an hid underwater so i havo no actual basis for my purchase. should i just shell out extra and go for the 18s? i dont wanna get the 10w only to regret getting it?

It's a tough one. If I had a dollar for every bit of kit I have upgraded or replaced in the process of going through my certs, or better yet if I had the money back, I could probably have afforded an 18W light  I still have a Scubapro Glide 2000 BCD which has been rotting in a cupboard since I went over to a BP/W, I'd have given it away or sold it but not many people here in Taiwan are 6' 1" and 240lbs...

This was my first HID purchase and I opted for the 10W on the basis of a compromise between burn time, output, size / weight, and cost. I imagine that individual divers will place different emphasis on each of those parameters. Other factors in going for the Sollys over, say, the Halcyon or Diverite models included quality of construction, excellent customer support, and the colour (a very fetching Tech Black)

Cheers,

TD

thanks bro thats a very good way of putting it. honestly i am so broke from my recent upgrades that the hid light will have to wait. im an impulsive buyer so im itching to get my hids although i have no real need for it right now. hopefully in the future i can justify the purchase of one. btw did they ship to you in taiwan? thanks

Tech Blue ship internationally, I've had about three orders from them now and they've all arrived in less than a week using UPS air freight.

The Sollys was shipped direct from Terkel using the good old United States Postal Service and, though it took a while longer to get here, it too arrived without any drama.

I've been diving with my Terkel since last year and it's always worked perfectly. The canister fits Barry Miller's 9 ah battery, which you can get from ENR Technical (I think that's their name) for $150 or so.

In any case, while the thing is well built and solid, if I were buying now I'd in all likelihood get a Barry Miller light right now. The Terkel focus can't be adjusted underwater, and the spot isn't very tight. It certainly does do the job and it's very tough, however.

would you say shelling out an extra $300 bucks to get the halcyon worth it? 10w or 18w? i just do regular dives and the occasional night dive. i just have the urge to get a hid light that will last me thru the years and will work good without any hitches.

No. I would not spend the extra $$. But I've only played with H and Salvo lights in the stores, haven't used either underwater.
