I bought a Wisdom computer and I do like it alot. However I do have a question.

Is there a way that you can set it so that it only displays bottom time. It confuses me at times when it displays air time. I have had to end several dives because it was telling me I needed to go up and I know that my bottom time wasn't out. I would reach the boat with like 1200 psi still in my tank. I generally like to hit the boat with 500 psi.

Any info about this computer will be a help.

I know the 'feature' you are talking about, and I don't know how you can change it. On the other hand, a little more understanding of what the computer is doing might help you better use the information the Wisdom is displaying.

First off, there will be a small tank icon with the word 'AIR' on it next to he number of minutes when the time being displayed is based on air consumption. If the 'air' numbers start getting low, you can stop breathing as much (for example, if you are swiming into the current but plan to drift back, you can turn around) or move to a shallower depth. After a little while the remaining bottom time based on 'air' will go up again with the revised air consumption estimates.

Also, know that the 'air' time is not calculated so that it will be 0 when than tank reaches 0 psi. There is some built in buffer time that I don't remember (for ascent and safety stop) but you can check the manual for details.

In summary, once you understand a little more about how the computer is 'thinking' you can better use the info displayed as you dive.

You can adjust the turn pressure and also adjust the tank end pressure and reserve air time remaining in the set screens.

You need to go to the set screen and select Set 2. Then scroll through the options until you get to about the 5th one which should be your end pressure. This can be set between 300 and 1500 psi. I don't remember the default for sure but I think it was set pretty high at maybe 1000 psi. You could probably reduce this to 500 psi for shallow recreational diving.

The next screen is the reserve time and this can be set anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes. 5 minutes or so here should do the trick for shallow recrational diving.

With these two changes, the computer should no longer be telling you to come up so soon that you end up with 1200 psi left in the tank .

BUT the most important thing to remember with any air integrated dive computer is to not let it do the thinking for you. You should ALWAYS know how to estimate how much bottom time you have left and how much air you will need for a safe ascent based on the SPG reading and your current situation. A diver has the ability to adjust and modify the information and recommendations a dive computer is making to compensate for all kinds of factors and information that a computer has no way of even knowing. A dive computer is just a tool to help you think and plan but is in no way shape or form ever a replacement for thinking or proper dive planning.

And you really need to read the manual that came with the computer before you go back in the water so you know how it works and can accurately interpret what it is telling you and the limitations in what it is telling you. Otherwise you better stick real close to your buddy and hope he read the manual on his computer.

Don't take this the wrong way but this is the reason some of the DIR people have a point about not using computers!! I own the same computer and I would never dive without one but why are you letting it think for you?

Reminds me of the story of the guy who shows up at the deco chamber and tells the Doc he is bent. Doc asks him for his symptoms. He has none, but says the computer says he is bent. Doc takes the computer throws it in the chamber and says, "well I guess we'll treat the computer!"

Think for yourself!!!
