I am just getting into diving. Planning on getting my open water cert. by June.
I am planning on renting numerous models before I ever buy anything. But I have found that one way to weed out alot of the products whether just terrible or way more than I need is to ask those who know. that would be you guys:wink:
Do you like the Titan LX or the Sherwood Brut. I will be doing mostly warm water but some cold lake water diving. I have got a mask, snorkel and fins.
Any info would be appreciated.

The Aqualung LX is vastly superior to a Brut and one of the best values around.
Also check out Apeks TXT20 and Zeagle Envoy.

I trained with the AL Titan, they worked well, and were pretty comfortable. My first reg was a used Brut, I had it serviced, and it worked well, it's light and comfortable with a Seacure mouthpeice, but it is something of a hard breather at depths greater that 60'. Given these two choices, I would take the Titan (it also has a few features the Brut doesn't).

As noted above, the Titan LX is far superior to the Sherwood Brut. AL is currently changing to a new version of the Titan LX, by coupling a first stage similar to the Mikron with an ACD to the Titan LX (same as Legend) second stage. Because of this change, many vendors have very attractive prices on the "old" Titan LX.

I dove a Titan for a year and loved it. When it came time to buy a reg I ended up with a Zeagle mostly becuase I got a great deal. Great reg you will be happy with for years.

I concur on the Aqualung.

The Brut is really in my opinion no longer fair value for money.

Sure, but...

AquaLung does NOT recommend the Titan LX for cold water diving. Check the web page here: Aqua Lung Regulator Range and look for those regulators that have the snowflake icon (Coldwater resistance).

The Titan LX Supreme is a candidate as is the Kronos Supreme, Legend Glacia, Legend Sureme and Legend LX Supreme. I would expect these regs to be more expensive that the Titan LX.

Be sure you read the owner's manual for any regulator you intend to buy and find out exactly what the manufacturer commits to in terms of cold water diving.

Oceanic is right up front about it: none of their piston first stages are to be used below 50 deg F and can not be adapted for cold water diving. Right up front...

Then again, cold water is a relative concept. Are the lakes less than 50 deg F?

I have a Titan LX and love it. I got a new one a few months ago when my LDS was selling off their older versions. Its a good breather but I can't comment on using it in colder water as I have just used it in Florida.

I will also recommend the older version of the Titan LX. I do not have any knowledge of the new Titan which appears to be a variation on the MICRON. I have the Supreme version which just adds an environmental seal. It breaths well and dry in any position and easily to past 100 fsw.

I have a Sherwood Brut laying around somewhere, but I don't use it. I bought it to use as a pony reg but the performance is so bad that it's almost not usable. And it was that way from the time it was new. It's just not a very good reg. I'd get an Aqualung. Even though the only Aqualung reg I have is a vintage Conshelf, I hear good things about the new ones.
