Found the Sherwood Scuba Silhouette BCD, Brut Regulator, Octo and Gauge on sale for $699, any comments would be appreciated.

I have an older Brut. It works, and has the reputation of being rock solid reliable, but it does breathe a little hard, after three dives a day, or going really deep, I felt kind of tired.

i just bought a used Sherwood Maximus Reg, Octo, SPG on ebay for $200... i think there's better deals to be had.

I've rented the Brut many times, and although it's a very reliable reg, i find that it breathes hard and gives dry mouth very quickly...

If it fits you comfortably in the water, it may be an OK deal, If it doesn't fit, you may give up diving because it is too uncomfortable.

The odds are better to buy a lottery ticket, you may lose a dollar, or win millions. You may spend $699 and get stuck with an uncomfortable setup that you can't give away.

As someone that has looked at gear since the two hose regulators, If you buy comfortable gear you might keep diving. . . buy a BC that flops around with your tank, or a regulator with a poor fitting mouthpiece, or hard to breathe, you won't want to use it.

Please don't get in a hurry to buy gear, rent gear from as many different places as you can. When you've dove with the exact gear and like it, then shop for the exact models you're familiar with.

The brut is almost bulletproof, if you have a tech that's any good, he can make the brut breathe real good. I wouldn't get the Silohuette, becaue it's not weight integrated. A cheaper Sherwood BC that's weight integrated is the Magnum. You can't go wrong with sherwood IMHO, it's good gear and always reliable. I'm sure i'll catch some flamers that will tell you, buy the most expensive things you can, because it's better, they don't know why it's just better.

It's all personal preference, and MUDHOLE is right, rent for awhile see what you like and go from their.

Thanks to all, will rent for a while. I'd rather be sure instead of investing lots of $$$$$ in a POS.

Don't overlook good used gear, esp BC's. Often times you can find them at very good prices. It's a very good idea to have a tech check them out before buying. I would suggest you rent/beg/borrow and dive a couple of different designs....back inflate, jacket, weight intergrated...before you decide. You may well decide you like one style over the others.

As I understand, the Brut uses the sherwood dry first stage. This first stage is reliable and resistant to free flow at cold temperature and depth. It seems like more than half of the rental regs are Brut - probably because they are reliable. As I understand, parts are widely available, and you can get it serviced anywhere, and any countries.

I have been diving with my Brut for about 10 years now. It has never once let me down, in water from 35-80 degrees, no freeflows, breathes easy. Servicing is never over the top. I will buy sherwood for my next regs.

My primary reg setup is Oceanic Delta 4 but my backup set is Sherwood Magnum. Delivers air at different depths and positions but just a harder than my Oceanic and it you will definately notice the breathing difficulty if you swim on your back. Sherwood is good and I have no problem using it. Rent several options if you can before buying.
