Shark Week 7/31/2008

Did anyone watch the Shark Week show tonight about the mystery of Rain Island?

I think Discovery did a nice job of showing the other side. Basically the undertone of the whole show was conservation and at the end there is a 3-5 minute dialog about saving the sharks and how they are not maneaters.

I honestly felt that the power of the main event show trumped the fear factor of the 10 Deadliest Sharks nonsense about attack numbers.

Missed it tonight. Will have to catch it later but I guess this means there is no truth in the cliche, "We fed him to the sharks"? Bummer. Will have to find another way to dispose of bodies I guess j/k

Glad to hear they stressed the importance of conservation.

I caught that, and it was refreshing.
Unfortunately, there's about a 10:1 ratio of "attack" shows to conservation messages...

So... I switched to something lighter... Iron Chef... (where one of 'em is apparently fixing shark's-fin soup... )

Agreed on the ratio.

I really came away from that whole episode realizing that all the diving I am doing on this side of the pond is s***. Not to rag on the local dive spots, thats not what I mean.

Some of the images and video from the GBR is simply too much for words. I need to go there. Soon.

I would give a limb to dive on Rain Island.

Missed the episode but...Shark week is good this year. The only complaint is that there is way to much of the Mythbusters on it. I like them in small doses...not all day on the first day. Other than that, good stuff.

Not watching shark week. I'm actually boycotting them. It is more focused now on the drama of shark attacks than it is on the science. But I guess if there is no blood in the water the viewers will just change the channel. It's sad though. The one week of the year where shark protection can be brought to the public eye it is not. They just talk about shark attacks and how many deaths are related to shark attack.

I don't bother with Shark Week, but I'm glad to see there was at least a few minutes in the entire week of nonsense that was "devoted" to shark conservation.

I'm holding a "Sharkwater" party at the house next week so people can watch the documentary.

I saw Venice Beach on there last night!!! There was about 15 minutes dedicated to it for the sharks teeth that can be found there. It was pretty neat seeing somewhere I dive regularly!!!
