this is from CDNN, who are clearly anti-shark feeding. however, the timeline
leading up to the ban makes for an interesting read:

Shark Feeding Timeline

wish they'd chosen a less sensationalist photo than the diver with the
missing leg, however... ah well

I don't agree for the reasons stated, but it is a very cool experience...

There are other ways to enjoy large groups of sharks without feeding them. I recently did a dive off Jupiter, FL with the large group of Lemons that congregate there during the winter to breed. Of interest to me was the docile behavior from a normally aggressive type of shark. We laid on the bottom and the sharks just swam by checking us out. I felt a sense of awe, but respect as well. There were more sharks than I could count, and if they wanted to, they could have done some serious damage. There was no food offered, and the experience will stay with me for a long time.

On the flip side, my buddy was spearfishing a few weeks ago while I checked out the outside of a wreck. He speared a large grouper, and while removing the shaft, a large bull came in and took the fish. He could easily have lost his arm had he not pushed the fish away as the shark hit. The shark had no fear of us and our scuba. We were in his territory and removing food from his refrigerator. I guess our behavior may have more of an impact on the shark than their behavior on us.

Its been said before. They get used to being fed and expect it. So some diver comes along in the same area not knowing this is done and all these sharks come at him. I would not know what to do and I would panic.

These bans only work if enforced!!! People have been fishing sharks off of Grand Bahama. 4 years ago I counted 22 Sharks at Shark Junction (I may have counted some twice) last November I counted 4!! All of them had hooks in their mouths!!
I haven't been on a feeding dive. I still see lots of sharks. I have freinds that do feeds. I e-mailed one of them to see if they would check in here.
There is a right way and a wrong way to do feeds. Trouble comes when someone does it wrongly.

I think you are missing the point, is feeding good for the sharks and divers in genral not just the ones doing the feeding.

Didn't miss a thing

I agree that hand feeding is not a good thing. This is when the association gets made "Divers and food"
there are other ways to do it.

is it good for the sharks and the divers??
as long as the association isn't made Divers=Food there is no harm done.
