YouTube - Great White Appetite: Surprise Attack

Not sure a fiberglass job would have fared much better.

A little bull bit and chewed my old Achilles. Just left some scratches. I traded it latter for the Novurania Cancuro GT4.20. He got in the boat and we had to get out. I had to sneek up on him and whack him with a paddle, flat side to stun him, so I could get back in and toss him out. He then came back after we got back in--quickly--and proceeded to chew on the boat. He was an ornery little pest.

That's my friend, Malibu Divers instructor Charles Ingram. He was telling me about the incident last weekend when he was teaching a class at Casino Point, then I happened to see this YouTube video the next day.

Yes the shark made a completely un provoked attack on a rubber boat yet there was a diver in the water recording him swim around afterwords. Don't add up for me.

Looks a little odd to me also. The boat seems to be baited or something. Looks staged. I guess anything is possible. They do attack boats from time to time, usually a metal object thats close to the bait which disturbs the electrical field and they in turn get a little confused.

Obviously some of you know relatively little about great whites. They are known to bite boats and there indeed was a crew filming for Shark Week... the fact that they caught it on tape doesn't mean a thing relative to it being a set up or not. I'll take Charles' word on it any day. He was there.

If there is no boat for him to be in there where would the diver be other than in the water. :D

There have been great whites that have taken bites out of dive and fishing boats (although I can't remember any of the specifics) not to mention kayaks. I've had them follow me while kayaking around Catalina's West End decades ago. I've filmed them from cages (which they've gone right through when friends were down at Guadalupe Island on other trips). I've had at least one that I'm aware of swim by me 30 ft away.

A GWS biting a boat is just not that out of the ordinary. Frightening for anyone in the boat (including Charles, an ex-Marine), but not THAT unusual.

I had a bull shark get in the Achilles. My wife and I got out. After a bit, my wife asked me to get him out so she might get back in. I looked in the boat and he was just sunning himself enjoying the day. I got back in and asked him to leave but he seemed unimpressed at which point I showed him the way, he was not happy with our lack of hospitality. He was not very big, he did eat our Styrofoam ice chest and ruin our picnic. N

Any idea where this was filmed?

Dwayne.
