"Tourist loses arm to shark in Mexico
(AFP) – 6 hours ago

CANCUN, Mexico — A Canadian woman lost an arm and suffered serious injuries to a leg after being attacked by a shark while swimming just off the beach in the resort city of Cancun, local media reported.

"A female shark attacked and left her badly hurt," Mario Castro, head of the local civil protection office, told the El Diario del Yucatan newspaper.

Nicole Ruth, 38, was hospitalized in grave condition and had "her left arm and thigh detached," the daily reported.

Apparently the shark was close to the shore to give birth and the woman, who was with a large group of swimmers, got too close, the paper said.

Civil protection forces were trying to locate the animal.

Shark attacks are not common on Mexican beaches. Two people were killed in May 2008 in the Pacific coast town of Zihuatanejo."

Sad for the lady and the sharks. Fishermen have been taking them a lot lately. This will give them justification for trying to take them all.

Something seems unusual about the story still tho.

horrible

According to the other thread's relaed article, the woman was beyond the buoys in the open water, with a group of swimmers, who were taking pictures of this shark giving birth.

Stupid on a stick.

Does anyone know for sure what type of shark? I'm guessing it was a bull shark. There are tigers out there, but seem to be more bulls than anything.

There are many people trying to place blame for this woman getting brutally attacked by a predatorial beast. It's absurd to blame the animal, which is doing only what it's instincts tell it to. And equally absurd to blame the victim, who was simply enjoying a cooling swim in reasonably shallow water in front of her hotel. Any reports of "crowds of people scaring the birthing shark by getting to close to take pictures" sounds suspiciuosly like Mexican (or eco) spin to me, as I can't think of anyone in the world who would be stupid enough to voluntarily remain in the water with a 1.5 meter predator of the seas to take a few pictures, other than overzealous scuba divers, of course.

So who to blame? How about SCUBA divers. Think about it. By paying money for the selfish thrill of diving with killer sharks, you create an industry in a poorer nation of people who make a living off of said sharks, and encourage not only the "preservation" of these animals in populated tourist destinations, but also likely encourage dive shops to feed and ATTRACT the sharks to the area. Yes, a small pocket of sharks perennially came to the area, but your SCUBA industry has highly increased the likelyhood that diveshops etc will do what they can to increase the number of sharks in the area.

It's quite selfish, when you think about it. You want your neat little dive, and now some poor mother is forced to live her life without a thigh because she took a swim in waters you have contributed toward making dangerous.

I encourage a culling of these sharks. Tagging and monitoring would be helpful, as well.

The hyporcrisy of the diving community seems unmatched on this issue. Divers expect the right to interact with wildlife on their terms, all the while making the seas more dangerous by feeding and protceting viciuos predators, yet seek to blame an innocent woman for taking an innocent swim. Unbelievable.
