How quickly this topic degenerated into accusing Mike of being a WWW... or did he admit it, I can't remember.

As a Californian who dives in waters where GWS are known to be present, I have a few questions about GWS in Oz.

Here it is my understanding (and NOT from personal experience) that attacks are almost always from behind and/or from below. We did have an attack on an abalone diver in murky water where the head was bitten off. So attacks down there usually follow the pattern I mentioned earlier? Is this attack on the anterior region of the diver unusual?

Also someone in another thread posted that GWS attacks are almost always fatal. Here in SoCal it is my recollection that fatal attacks are relatively few... most divers survive the attack.

Just curious as to whether GWS behave different in the southern hemisphere (perhaps as a result of "reversed" Coriolis force!).

gees Dr Bill.... a real question!

i cant say there is a pattern

in Perth where they loose people to GWS often they are suually swimming off a beach. i recall one man standing in about 3 or 4ft of water and he was bitten on the legs/waist and died

a young marine biologist was taken in south australia last year (body not recovered i believe) while he was near the surface

surfers in South Australia get bitten quite often also - usually on the leg/thigh
