I'm moving from Chicago to Seattle in September. Given that I have to take my car 2/3 of the way across the country and I have lots of time to do it, I'm thinking about planning the road trip to hit dive destinations in states that I've never been to.

I'm open to suggestions. Where should I go?

Possible Destinations:

Iowa - Atlantic Rock Quarry, Atlantic, IA

South Dakota -- Lake Oahe, Pierre SD

North Dakota -- Lake Sakakawea, Fort Berthold Reservation

Montana -- Flathead Lake, Missoula-ish, MT

Idaho -- ??

Oregon -- ??

Washington -- Seattle area

This is near Salt Lake City - I believe slightly SE.
Homestead Crater | Midway Hot Springs | The Cater Utah

Since it's geothermal - they've introduced some tropical fish. I believe there is/was a resident shark also.

I'm not sure I believe this since last time I checked, Florida was a state but:
THE CRATER IS THE ONLY WARM SCUBA DIVING DESTINATION IN THE CONTINENTAL US.

From there cut across the state and dive the shark tank at Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas.

Possibly dive the B29 in Lake Mead - depending on how full the lake is now, it's either a deep rec. dive or a tec dive. There's a couple outfits with permits to dive it - Tech Diving Ltd. in Havasu is one of them.

I'd pass on Lake Powell, there may be one dive shop left there but it's a kayak place that does some diving.

I've also seen people diving in Lake Tahoe but have no details. I don't believe there's a shop there either.

Then take I-5 to the Pacific and work your way up the coast - especially diving the Kelp Sanctuary in Monterey - not to be missed. The only areas that diving is marginal is around SF Bay.

There's some good diving around LA also - boat diving in the Northern Channel Islands from the Ventura area - or farther south in Long Beach - there's a fleet of dive boats diving the coast and Catalina Island. You can even take the Catalina Express over to Catalina - so many divers do it, they're set up to handle dive gear. I know people in LA who dive the Marine Park there and back in the same day - an overnight would be easier. I believe the Express has secured parking for your stuff but check.

From the Monterey area, LA is a full days drive south. And you have consider traffic patterns in the LA area - not just driving distance.

Bring the heavy wetsuit or drysuit if you've got one.

I don't think there's much diving in the Dakota's, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming or Nebraska.

sounds like fun.

Slightly off. Homestead is 90+F, no marine life other than fake lobster, alligator and crab inhabit the place.
You are thinking of SeaBase which is west of SLC near Grantsville.
Yes, there is tropical fish, but the nurse sharks have since passed.

If you're headed the Vegas route, I would stop at Sand Hollow for the day and skip SeaBase.

The B29 in Mead has been closed to divers for a couple of years. At this time the NPS is conducting an inspection, which will help determine any future contracts.
The PBY, Train Hopper, Intake, Rock Piles, Black Canyon are still available.

I'd pass on Lake Powell, there may be one dive shop left there but it's a kayak place that does some diving.
If you can find air support there are some cool things in Lake Powell. Granted you would have to know where to go. It's been a few years since I've been there so most of my go to spots are likely above water now.

I've also seen people diving in Lake Tahoe but have no details. I don't believe there's a shop there either.
There are a couple shops that serve Tahoe. I have used Tahoe Dive Center and Sierra Diving Center. I believe there may be one or two more in the area.

What!? No California? You're missing out if you don't hit Monterey.

A lot of people dive “Thousand Springs”, Hagerman, Idaho not far from Boise in the Snake River.

I think Monterey would be worth its own trip!

My path from Illinois to Washington is likely going to take me across some or all of the purple states on the map. Based on my U-Haul rental options, I may hit IA, SD, ND, and MT on my way there. After arriving, I may make a secondary loop with OR, ID, and eastern WA.

Would love to hear about Flathead Lake if you do end up diving there. Hoping to get there soon too.
