OK a disclaimer - I'm not a Doctor so this is what helps me and not medical advice. Remember the second part of my remarks. Clear early and often. Clear once before descent, clear with every breath until you are at least 20' down (desend slow, this is not a race), then as needed (biggest pressure change is in the first 15') . Most of all relax. Tense neck muscles will not help -remember to look up to clear. Relax and enjoy the excursion. Let us know how it turns out.
 
As you go down, if you get to a point where the pressure builds and you can't clear, come up shallower just a little bit and this should help. My wife had a lot of trouble with her ears until she dove more.

This is very true. IF you are already to a point where you have ear discomfort, you will need to assend a bit to be able to clear.
