I have body issues too with the way I look in a wetsuit. Keeping track of what you eat is a good idea as my Dr. recently suggested that I write down what I eat. I replied to my doc, if I log my dives I guess I can log my food.

By the way, several posters mentioned the idea of swimming in order to increase your exercise level while taking it easy on your knees. I can attest to that. A while back, my knees began to give me a bit of trouble. I eventually had to stop running--the pounding was just too much. However, even though I swam quite a bit each summer, I started increasing the workout by using fins. I began making about 300 yards during my breaks (I was a lifeguard) using my fins, mask and snorkle. I didn't try for that much speed or anything. I just used the fins to put a bit more pressure on my legs. Worked great! My knees quit aching, strengthened, and I was even about to resume running every once in a while with no pain whatsoever. So hang in there!

As far as nutritional intake, your body responds better if you eat several small meals a day instead of two or three large meals. I try to eat six small meals a day. Two of these meals are protein shakes. The Body for Life book by Bill Phillips is a great guide to losing weight the healthy way. It has worked wonders for many people I know.

It is an easy formula.

If you take in more calories than you burn, you gain weight.

If you take in less calories than you burn, you lose weight.

If they are equal, you maintain.

It is much easier to cut intake than increase the number of calories burned.

When I need to lose weight I do not change what I eat, but I pay a lot of attention to portions. Something most americans, including me, need to do.

The plan is easy, execution gets tricky.

As for exercise, swimming or water aerobics classes are really good for low impact on your knees and will help you not only shed pounds, but be more comfortable in the water. Check your local YMCA and see if they have an classes. Good luck with your weight loss.

Jake

I am all for swimming. Water aerobics, however....mehh... I have taken the class and it never gets my heart rate into the aerobic range. Swimming kills me though.

think about this, you got no one to impress, right? Your husband loves you no matter what.

My husband is an awesome man and loves me very much. I couldn't dream of a better man. Despite my significant weight gain, he still tells me I'm beautiful. Awwww!

I will have to check out the food logs. I like the idea of making my own too (someone mentioned they had made their own on their computer).

It's only been a couple hours since swimming, and I'm already feeling muscles that I didn't know I still had! LOL I think I'm gonna be sore tomorrow. LOL I am certainly tired now. I think I'll sleep well tonight.

I suppose I should also mention that 3 weeks ago I weighed about 10 lbs more than I do now. I think most of that was water weight, as I retain quite a bit of water at times. But it's still a loss!

Logging your food and being honest with yourself is the whole premise behind Weight Watcher's. If you can do it by yourself, for free....then go for it! We had to have that extra accountability, though. You have to be disciplined either way.
