I really, truly adore food, too. I can tell you what restaurant we ate in in Copehagen nine years ago, and what each of us ordered . . . :)

My compromise with that is that I eat pretty much what I want, but a lot less of it than I could. And I keep moving.

I will also see my doc, again. I've not had much success with him in the past, but something's gotta give! I even tried to get approved for bariatric surgery a year ago, but the insurance company denied me. I think because even though I'm overweight, I'm still healthy. I have no major health problems.... thank goodness for that. I have mixed feelings about being declined for the bariatric surgery.

I also have tried the atkins diet (after reading the book), about 5 years ago, and again about 2 years ago. I lost 17 lbs in 3 weeks, but just couldn't stay on the diet cause I felt terrible. Good idea, just doesn't do well for me. My uncle lost about 75 lbs on it though!

Weight loss for the sake of weight loss is bound to result in failure. About this time last year, I made the decision to get in better shape to be a better diver. I was never obese, but pretty soft and overweight from years of driving a mouse and only occasionally getting any excercise.
I started out slow with excercise and gained some control of my diet. No seconds, smaller portions and drink lots of water. I've gradually increased my excercise and it's not such a chore. It does make me a better diver and that is all the motivation I need. As an additional benefit, I feel better than I have since I was in my early 30's, I have more energy, a clearer head and better endurance.
I'm guessing my weight went from 195 to about 175, but I've never weighed myself. The weight is not a concern for me and was never a measure of my success. I've still got a long way to go, but I doubt I'll even notice when I get there. ;)

I compromise by breaking the day's intake into a bunch of large meals ... I think I'm part hobbit ... ;)

Get a black wetsuit. They make you look thinner. :D

Seriously though, this is all very good nutrition and weight loss advice. Can't add to it. But one thing I want to say is nobody really cares what you look like. Don't let your low self-image deprive you of what you want to do. So even if you don't reach your goal, go diving anyway and enjoy yourself. The fish will love you if you're a size 4 or a size 16.

Oh, and I hear you about the knees.

BTW, I finally did my first cardio workout lunch time in about a month due to illness. It felt great. Tommorrow, back to strength training.

Osama, are you reading this?

BINGO!! This is exactly why Weight Watchers® is the most successful and longest running program out there. You don't have to deny yourself the things you like, you just learn to limit portions and exercise. As TSandM said earlier, it's all about calorie intake versus calories burned. Make the lifestyle change, and the weight will stay off. Go on a fad diet, and the weight will come back as soon as you drop the diet. I can't count the number of people I know who have tried South Beach and others like them, only to drop out later and gain the weight back.

I use a product called Thermo from MMUSA www.mmusa.com it's a supplement you take under the tongue that boosts your metabolism. Totally natural. With exercise and diet, it helped me shed 10 lbs in about 6 weeks.

Since you had your knees operated on, take some before a good walk. Take the dog (or get one) for a walk. That'll give you a workout.

Good luck!
With exercise and diet alone, your metabolism will increase dramatically and 10 pounds in a single month is perfectly reasonable. I did it in April.

No magic pills, diet books, or Slim Fast needed.

Write down everything you eat, including the number of calories. Knock 500 off that number and keep your calories below that. Watching what you eat does you no good at all if you don't know just how many calories you're putting into your body. Many people are surprised to learn that simple pasta and white bread have tons of calories. A typical turkey sandwich with cheese has about three times as many calories as a taco from Taco Bell. If calories in is greater than calories out, you gain weight, end of story. A single bottle of soda is almost 300 calories on average.

Get some exercise 3 times a week and the pounds *will* melt away. Note that this isn't even a diet.. it's just straight up being healthy. Eat less and exercise.
