I’m considering getting split fins. I started out using open-heeled paddles but switched to a pair of Oceanic full-foot paddle fins because the former gave me leg cramps on every dive. My Oceanic full-foot fins are great – light and fast – but occasionally, they also give me cramps, especially on long surface swims back to shore after a dive. It may be high time for me to buy a pair of split fins.

I’ve done some reading on split fins (Scuba Diving magazine annual fin test reports, Scubaboard, etc.). I understand that split fins are not for everyone or for all types of kick or diving situation. I also realize that divers can be “passionate” about their fins, and that there may already be strong opinions on paddle vs. split fins. That discussion already exists here: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=162021 . I’m hoping to get alot of information and opinions on which specific split fins work best for you (I know how Scuba Diving magazine ranks the different split fins, but I’m more interested in tapping a much wider audience and population sample for less bias and more objectivity). The best way would be for me to try different models to determine the best splits for me. However, my dilemma is that the LDS nearest where I dive will let me rent any brand of split fins I want to try, as long as they are Scubapro (that’s the only brand they carry). So I may end up having to buy some split fins without the benefit of first trying them out.

I’ve heard lots of good reviews on Apollo Bio Pro (and its variations), so I think that would be a safe choice. What about splits from other manufacturers – Atomic Aquatics, Scubapro Jet Twins, Aeris Velocity splits, etc.? Also, has anyone tried different split fins (for example, both the Apollo Bio and the Atomic Aquatics) and would like to share their experience and opinion? Thanks in advance.

I use the atomic aquatics,

and as far as leg cramps, i higly doubt you would ever get one with these babys. There very comfortable, powerful and effiencient. The only downside i have heard is peapole have a hard time turning around with, and that they kick up a lot o silt in wrecks, and are long so there not great all together for wreck diving. I havent had these problems my self....but im awesome. LOL

I started with Apollo Bio fins and loved them. A few years later I got a pair of Scubapro Twin Jets and didn't really like them at first, they felt different, but after several dives I loved them as well. Now I will switch back and forth depending on if I'm diving wet or dry (the Bios are too small for my drysuit) and I don't really have any preference. I love them both equally well, they are just a little different feel from each other.

I really believe that any quality, good brand split fin you buy you will get used to quickly and likely love them, stick to a similar design and material as the apollo or scubapro as I wouldn't want to recommend something else that I don't have experience with.

I must have tried 10 different split fins. I have this luxury as a dive store owner. No matter which split you purchase, you are going to be happy with your purchase. It comes down to foot pocket shape, general comfort of the fin, and visual appearance.

If you are going to order them from an online store, give them a call and let them give you advice on fitting. Believe it or not, most online stores can fit you ALMOST as well with good questioning as they could do in person. Of course, you could ALWAYS go really safe and get the split fins that has won the Scuba Diving Magazine Tester Choice award for the last 7 years.

Thanks,

Phil Ellis

ScubaPro Twin Jets suit me just fine...

Apollo Bio Fins, regular type, not "Pros". Be careful about sizing. Their system makes little sense.

The tree bark derivative, Pycnogenol, has been shown in clinical trials to prevent cramps. Peer reviewed paper published in Europe and reported in US medical press. Product available at most "health" stores.

Scuba Pro TwinJets are great. I prefer the black ones as they are a little stiffer than the other colors. I had mares blades before and got leg cramps, but never happend with the TwinJets.

I have both the Aeris Velocity Duos and the Tusa Full foot Expert Zooms. I like them both, but in spite of looking like they would only be good as snorkeling fins, the FF Expert Zooms are the best performing....for me.

It has been my experience that all splits are not the same, just as all paddle fins are not the same. Some are stiffer, some are softer and the same technique does not work with every fin.

I like my scubapro splits. They make my bad joints very happy.

Not sure how you're ever going to get a comparison, since most people don't go and try each one. Chances are good that everybody likes what they use.

If you can't try them at shops near you, you might want to hang out at a busy dive site and see if people will let you try their fins.
