I never use anything that can't be easily cut. But then, I wouldn't use that kind of plastic clip either. But then, #2, I'm not you.

How you feel about your equipment is the most important aspect of gear set up. Your fingers will be the ones connecting or disconnecting everything, so do what feels best for you. Sure, copy what you think might work for you, but don't worry if our setups are different.
Thanks. I’m a new rec diver and trying out one of these Gear Keeper retractors for my SPG. I didn’t use a cave line because the key ring is 1 inch diameter and didn’t want my SPG to hang lower, but I will just get a smaller key ring and cave line it.

I tried those at one point. It turned into more of a problem than a solution for me. Nothing beats a Stainless Steel Bolt Snap.

KISS: Keep It Super Simple!

Is this key ring attachment to my SPG fine or does it need to be cavelined? Seems like it’s not any worse than a D-rings on BCD.

I would attach a bolt snap to that console using a small loop of inner tube. You first lock the loop over itself on the bolt snap (fold the loop around the ring on the bolt snap then pull one end through the other) then do the same on the console, except you are now pushing the bolt snap through the remaining loop so it’s locked on the console frame, or around the hose fitting. I prefer this to using cave line because A) it’s easier and quicker to do, and B) you don’t even to cut it free, you can pull it free in an emergency. (It takes a big tug) It might not be as long lasting as a cave line wrap, but for items that are attached to a hose and therefore will not disappear into the ether, I don’t care about that. If you get nervous, you can replace the inner tube loop once a year or every couple of years.

Buy an assortment of swivel and double-ender bolt snaps and some zip-ties. The small 3" swivels are great for SPGs, Octos, dive lights, etc. Get a few sizes of both types. They are endless useful for all sorts of scuba needs.
