You know, there are so many gear "requirements" for DIR diving, that I periodically chafe against them, and the "requirement" for a 3 C-cell twist-on backup light has been one I keep trying to find fault with. Now, they have backed off the C-cell requirement (although they're still not in favor of CR123s, for fairly good reason -- they are expensive to replace, and not easily found in all places), but the whole switch thing is looked down upon for a reason. We have owned any number of small lights with switches of various sorts, and without exception, every one of them has failed in a manner related to the switch -- either the switch fails to work, or they flood through it. I've given up fighting, and it's twist-on for me.

how come you were fighting so hard to get switches on your lights? :)

I am looking specifically for a twist on type, Ive had lights fail before at the switch so I'd like to avoid that all together.

Heser!

I did a cenote dive a week ago and it blew the doors off the Divemasters cannister light...plus it will not be damaged in the event of a flood.

I wasn't fighting for switches, I was fighting for a smaller, less expensive light! (Which I found in the Dorcey, finally :) )

The Hesers are awesome (until I lost mine at a dive site :(

Photon Torpedo LED are nice
Halcyon LED are nice

It became pretty obvious in Cave (for Mexico caves anyway) that an LED backup light is basically a no-brainer. Long life, really nice bright light, only downside is a higher initial cost and mine tend to burn the batteries down very quickly at first but then level out.

LED works great here in the ocean too, and can even be used as a primary for some dives.

I started with Salvo Rat LED backups, and they were great. For loaners I picked up a cheap set of Photon Torpedoes (Halogen, though :/ ). Lately I've been using a UK SL3 eLED and I like it's performance for the price (half that of similar lights) and the construction is still solid save for the wire clip on the back. I'd prefer a molded post to tie a bolt snap to, but haven't had any issues with the clip yet.

Peace,
Greg

Just a heads-up: UK may have changed how they do the clip on the SL3, but I've seen an early version of those clips open up to the point where it could be removed from the light by hand. Just one or two dives on that light too. It probably got "sat on" or something, but just keep an eye on that clip.

In 30-plus dives I haven't noticed an issue yet, and I'm hardly the easiest on my gear ;). But I would be curious if I could remove both the spring clip and the plastic fitting around it and just use the steel post, but I'm not going to ruin a perfectly good light to find out.

Peace,
Greg

I have hundreds of dives on my photon torpedo and halcyon scout. I really like them. I tend to leave my halcyon can light on shore because the other two are so bright and less bulk.
