I have 2x HP LED Scouts & 3x Dorcy II/Penetrator 220s

Dorcy - Pro: cheap ($48 each if you buy two), compact (6xAA), tight bright beam. Con: Pressure-related issues as Lynne mentioned above also make them hard to turn on/off below ~45m

Halcyon - Pro: tighter & brighter, no pressure problems. Con: More expensive ($189 each), larger (3xC)

I'd happily recommend either depending on what your priorities are on cost & size

Thanks everyone for your advice, I will look into the lights you've recommended. Bubbletrubble, I will mark my lights because thats one issue I've had and seen others have, great advice! Thanks.

I see you live in Saugus, if you haven't seen the Salvo/Light monkey LED backups drop me a message. I live on the North Shore

+1 on the Light Monkey 3 watt.

All the best, James

I use xenon scouts. they cost me 50 bucks each new.
I think the newer xenon models are closer to 80 or something though

the new HP scout module is the best thing I've ever seen though

I really like my OMS Vegas, one got run over by a car and the damned thing is still tickin after 300-400 dives? Plenty bright, and they're not HUGE like some of the backups being recommended. I don't wear mittens, so I can deal with a normal sized light.

I have an old Scout that I upgraded with an LED module (home-brew) and a newer Light Monkey Rat with LM LED module. Both are solid lights, but I prefer the Scout "block pattern" on the body. But both lights are well built and can take a beatin'.

I also just picked up an MB-Sub X1-VB, and it's a pretty sweet light. Seems like a solid build and no more electronics than Scout/LM LED lights. It's non-DIR in the sense that it has a magnetic rotating switch.

I've seen the Rat Jr. lights, and they're almost too small for me to work with. Plus they use CR123 batteries, which aren't cheap unless you buy bulk off the internet.

You know, there are so many gear "requirements" for DIR diving, that I periodically chafe against them, and the "requirement" for a 3 C-cell twist-on backup light has been one I keep trying to find fault with. Now, they have backed off the C-cell requirement (although they're still not in favor of CR123s, for fairly good reason -- they are expensive to replace, and not easily found in all places), but the whole switch thing is looked down upon for a reason. We have owned any number of small lights with switches of various sorts, and without exception, every one of them has failed in a manner related to the switch -- either the switch fails to work, or they flood through it. I've given up fighting, and it's twist-on for me.
