415862 Swivelling Connector

Zak, I got this form mares distributor in Australia. How does it match with your words that Mares doesnt make such connectors?

Mares does produce a 135 degree elbow such as pictured. It is used on the HUB units. The "swivel" that I have been discussing is the type that is a ball joint variety, and is the same form that Atomic and Apeks use on their regs.

I thought that is what it looked like. The elbow is not assembled to the regulator on the hub, it is an accessory included in the packaging with the bcd. Due to the hose configuration of the hub (routing under the arm), some felt as if the reg was pulling down on the mouth. Hence the elbow was included as an option if the diver preferred to use it.

I need some help/advice. I have the Proton 42 She Dives and really like it however my jaw and temples get really sore when I dive. I bought the JAX mouthpiece thinking that would help but it hasn't made a difference. Someone suggested getting a swivel as it would change the position of the regulator but from what I am reading, it seems that is not a good option. What exactly is the swivel - does it really move or is it just an adapter to change the position of the hose?
Other than having an extremely long hose, is there anything else that might help with the soreness? I did some pool work yesterday and today my jaw/temples are sore. We leave Saturday for a week of diving, 4 dives a day the first 2 days...so I'm thinking I will not be able to eat at this rate (might not be a bad thing since I could use to lose a few!!). Seriously, I had less jaw pain with the rental regs (they were Mares but don't remember which model) than I have with my nice expensive model.

Julie,

Have you talked a local dive store about your options? The swivel is a possibility. While it is not the best it is not horrible. You can again talk to your LDS about which will work for you. Another choice which I think is better, is to try the newer Myflex (sp?) hoses. In 2009 our mid to high pricepoint regulators are going to come stock with this hose. We call it Superflex. Nonetheless it can be purchased as an aftermarket product from your LDS. It is lighter in weight, and more flexible, than standard LP hoses. This will most likely take some of the strain off.

At the end of the day, if your profile is still accurate less than 24 dives. I might suggest it is just a matter of your jaw and facial muscles not used to biting down on one thing for extended periods of time? Hard to say.

Note, some say the metal regulators are heavier. While this is true out of the water, although not by much, we're splitting grams here. In the water the Proton Metal 2nd stage is designed to be approximately .5grams negative. Not much. So try the hose first and discuss the swivel options with your lds.

Hope this helps.

Zak - it was the dive shop that recommended the swivel. I was hoping they get it in so I could try it in the pool before the trip. I'll probably leave my gear the way it is because I am new to diving (18 so far) and I'll be doing the PADI wreck class dives so that's enough of a distraction without worrying about a change in my gear! I would like to figure out something else for future dives though. I will ask them about the Superflex hose. Thanks Zak!
