Are there any secluded resorts that's not surrounded by huge amounts of tourists in the Mayan Riveria?

I read about the Maroma Hotel, anything else like it? Also with a good dive shop nearby?

Thanks.

Hi Kalekainxx,

playamaya here. Good question. I have been down here near Tulum for more that 12 years and have watched one Mega Resort after another go up. Then there are the Eco-Chic "Resorts" on the Punta Allen Road which used to be squatter stick houses and are not much better today yet you can pay $600 a day at Bikini Boot Camp to be awakened at 5 AM and run around and then fed carrot sticks. This is Horse Hockey to me but appeals to the pampered class as they believe the "Bohemian" experience and their own Mayan Shaman is worth sleeping without power, hot water,AC, TV and sleep hidden under a mosquito net.

In 1997 I bought a piece ofland on an empty Bay (there are no more empty bays) and built Casa Playa Maya. Since then I have hosted countless dive groups especially those who want both the experience and wonder of Cenote Diving (we are in the center of the Cenote Central on the Riviera Maya-Dos Ojos is 2 miles away) and divng the Meso-American Reef or Cozumel.

In fact right now I have 19 divers from a Dive Club in Lotz Poland who are having a ball! You wil not find any Small Resorts unless you want the ones that cost about $1500 night to start up near Playa del Carmen and at Playa Secreto but take a Google at Casa Playa Maya. We are a private Villa with 4 Bedrooms and can sleep 18 or so on a great snorkel Bay.

Good luck and safe and happy diving to you.

Bill (Underwater since 1962)

If your budget allows, you might want to check out Esencia:
Esencia, luxury hotel estate in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya

Another small place is Petit Lafitte, just north of Playa. It does have large resorts on either side, but the place itself is small and intimate, with staff that have been with them for years. They are currently ranked #5 on TripAdvisor. I used to stay with them at their previous location several times a year before I moved here, and am still personal friends with several of the staff - they are just the best.
Petit Lafitte - family vacation hotel in Playa del Carmen

The rates are nowhere near $1500 a night. Depending on when you go, and what sort of room or bungalow you choose, they run between $175 to $350 USD per night, for two people. (not each).

In any case, wherever you end up, there are numerous choices for both ocean and cenote diving, whether you choose to go with the operation at your hotel or not. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Maroma.

If you want some really good inside information on hotels and everything else, Playa del Carmen, Mexico's Virtual Guide Book : Playa.Info is a fantastic forum run and largely contributed to by local expats and regular visitors.

The other posts have already listed two of my top three sites for the coast. The third is Can-Do Travel Guides. They make fantastic guide maps that will help you narrow your options.

One resort is hanging in the back of my mind and maybe it is what you are looking for. Casa Cenote They are about as isolated as you can get these days without venturing south of Tulum. Never stayed there since I like Playa and the wife loves Akumal. Hope this helps.

kalekainxx - the beach across the road from our community is one of the few secluded beaches between Cancun and Tulum. Xcacel Beach is a protected turtle sanctuary so development is prohibited (although some rich mega-resorts are trying their best). We're 5 miles south of Akumal, 1 mile north of Dos Ojos and 10 miles north of Tulum.

playamaya - I've heard from several divers in our community that your group is top notch and one of the best in the area. Keep up the good work! Hopefully we'll run into you on one of our upcoming trips...

Why Thanks you Kalikainxx. Where are you? Near Xcacel?
