When I went diving in the Florida Keys I got seasick on the boat. It didn't hit me until after the first dive. There were 4 foot swells. I'm going to Cozumel next weekend and I had my doctor give me a prescription for the patch that goes behind the ear to prevent motion sickness. I've never been to Coz. Is the ocean usually rough? Anyone ever get seasick while diving there?

One nice thing about diving in Cozumel, especially if you prone to seasickness, is that many dive sites are not that far from shore and SI's are very often on land. My DH also has seasickness issues and has not as of yet had any major problems. The waters can be rough at times, usually not, but for some folks it doesn't matter. I hope it all works out for you. One thing to remember is to continue to hydrate and keep meals light. DH says it helps. Sue

I readily get seasick on Lake Michigan, but I have dived in Cozumel, Aruba and Roatan and have never gotten seasick.

I always get seasick every time I go diving in the Keys. And I spent 3 years on a man-o-war and never got seasick!

Cozumel is much calmer, it seems. No problems with seasickness there.

Ray, I too am susceptible to seasickness. And for those who dont UNDERSTAND, it ruins the ENTIRE day. But, 99.98% of the time in Cozumel it will not be a concern. Just dont get in a 20 foot dive boat that is headed to Maracaibo Reef and you'll be fine.

The island of Cozumel is about 10 miles off the mainland. The main dive sites on in the channel between the island and the mainland, on the west side of the island. The most common wind pattern is a trade wind from the NE.

Since the dive sites are close to shore, wind from this most common direction doesn't have a chance to build up very big swells.

I spent a week diving in Coz last month, and a light chop was about as bad as it got concerning the water.

Previously, I could get seasick by just watching a boat go up and down on waves; I didn't even have to be on it (and I'm not exaggerating). Someone suggested Bonine (available at Wal-Mart), and it works very well for me. I take one pill in the morning and another at night, and start taking them 2 days before I'll be on a boat. In June, I was in Belize and had a very rough 4-hour round-trip on a boat going from Ambergris Caye to the Turneffe Islands. When I made that trip without even a hint of seasickness, I knew I'd found the right medication for me.

Going back to Coz for 2 weeks in January!

Ray, I get seasick very very easily. It doesn't matter if you're 50 feet from shore you can still get sick. Been there done that. I take Meclizine (avail behind the counter, like at Longs/Walgreens but you have to ask for it.) It's usually like $6 or $7 for 100. Another fellow diver turned me onto this stuff before a 4 day live-aboard and I've never looked back! ;) It doesn't make you drowsey, thirsty, sleepy and your ears don't ring. Completly safe for diving. Been using it for 11 years now. I take two the day before diving and one the next morning and every diving day thereafter.

Well two of us just got seasick this morning on six foot waves this morning at Yucab. I don't usually have a problem but it still got me today. I will be taking Bonine tomorrow. That is what I recommend.

While the waters are generally fairly calm in Coz, there are no guarantees. I have experienced some extremely rough waters in Coz before, so it can happen. If you're going in November and are prone to seasickness, getting the patch was a good idea. I used the patch on an Aggressor trip in July and didn't get sick once, so it DOES work. The best part is you just put it on a few hours before you get on the boat, and after that all you have to do is remember to change it every 36 hours! It does give you some serious dry mouth though so drink LOTS of water. Have a great time!
