Sounds like you entered into their territory, when you do that you are in trouble. Stay out of their zone and let them come to you, in other words, don't get too close to where they hang out.
Watch also for them blowing long trails of bubbles, this is a warning sign to back off from their territory.
Actually Tyler Rock is nowhere near any sea lion rookeries or haul outs. It's not even very close to any shoreline (pinnacle). All we could figure was that it was territorial behavior over females. But hard to know for sure.
We often dive near a well known rookery in Barkley Sound. We don't get to close to them and usually the juvenile males are the only ones to visit us. I've done dozens of dives with sea lions but this was the only time I saw a mature male. Impressive...
