or to widden that question a little, if the parts are not "exact" cosmeticly the same, are they functionally a copy of the same? (if that makes sense)

I haven't actually tried to"exchange" parts, some "eyeball" close but I wouldn't recommend that as a definative answer. I wouldn't recommend using other than Apeks parts in a Apeks reg and the same goes for any brand.

Another plus to the Tek-X is that Diver's Supply has a lifetime exchange policy for these regs. So anytime they upgrade the model, you can exchange it for a fixed fee (I think it is $120). So if you have to rebuild it every year anyway, the cost to replace it is not that much. So you can get a brand new set every couple of years.
