Can the AOW course include Nitrox? Or does that have to be a stand a lone cert?

Absolutely. From SDI Advanced Scuba Diver Development Program - SDI | TDI | ERDI | PFI

SDI Advanced Diver minimum requirements:
  • Complete four SDI, TDI, or ERDI Specialty Diver courses or equivalent; only 1 course without dives, may be credited towards the SDI Advanced Diver development program, with the exception of SDI Computer Nitrox
  • Proof of 25 logged dives
  • After the previous requirements are met and verified by an instructor, the instructor issues the SDI Advanced Open Water Diver certification by submitting the SDI Diver Registration form to SDI Headquarters or the appropriate Regional Office, or registering the students online through member’s area of the SDI website
  • Requirements for the SDI Junior Advanced include the above requirements, provided the four specialty courses they have taken are allowed by their age

Or are you referring to the Advanced Adventurer Diver? (SDI Advanced Adventure Diver - SDI | TDI | ERDI | PFI). In that case, it makes more sense to have it as a separate course.

To emphasize what @wetb4igetinthewater said, you could have a nitrox dive in SDI's Advanced Adventure course (which is the equivalent to PADI's AOW), but having that dive would not qualify you to do a nitrox dive after the course. The same is true for PADI.

When I teach either, I try to do more interesting things for the elective dives, such as night, search and recovery, wreck or a buoyancy dive.

That is true, just doing the dives as part of the Advanced Adventure would not qualify you to do a nitrox dive after the course. Although, as long as all of the Nitrox theory was covered, and the diver passed the exam and then showed they could analyse and mark up the gas, they would have met all the requirements for the nitrox course and so you could issue an Advanced Adventure and a Nitrox certification. So for a very small amount of additional theory they could get 2 certifications providing a very useful combination.
