The wing you bought is meant for a double setup not a single tank for sure. You should have bought the 18Kg doughnut wing (or the 13Kg).
The shop I bought it from solid if in the specific knowledge that it was not planned to be used with doubles. I guess they sold me what suited them not me.

I realised that I should probably have stated in my first post that the dives were in salt water as that would affect the ballast requirement.

I will try to test the buoyancy of the suit as soon as possible

it does, but not that much, and remember that the wing capacity is larger in salt than in fresh due to the density differences. At your height and weight, with a steel tank and a backplate and wing, you should need half the lead or less...

If you bought a complete 13 or 18 Kg SP BP/W, you would have gotten the STA with the system for your single tank requirement. I don't know why you were sold the horseshoe 27Kg wing at all, it doesn't make sense to me based on what you are describing. I wouldn't have bought a horseshoe wing of any size anyways.

I did get an STA with it. Had I had more experience I wouldn't have bought the horseshoe type either. That doesn't change the fact that I have one though and want to change it.

With that in mind I just need to figure out what size is right and what brand.

Your issues are not the result of your wing being a horseshoe. They are a function of too much capacity, and a center panel wide enough for doubles.

Remember the lower arc of a "donut" wing is under the bottom end of the cylinder when the diver is in trim. It's the absolutely lowest portion of the wing. Gas always goes to the high point in any wing. The idea that donut wings allow the gas to somehow magically "circulate" is nonsense. Gas will never go downhill, under the bottom end of your cylinder and up to the other side.

To get gas to move from one side of a donut wing to the other requires the diver be about 70 degrees heads down.....

27kb is 60lb, holy crap, how could this ever been market as single tank wing, ridiculous marketing.

Like tobin said, the issue has little to do with horse shoes vs donut. It has everything to do with the huge 27kg/60lb lift and the wide center channel. Get something in 30-40lb range for cold water, and shape for single tank (narrow center channel)

I do realise that about the wing being under the tank. Was diving with an instructor at the weekend who had one and was watching it fairly closely especially after I realised the issues with mine. Got a far better idea about what will work and what certainly didn't.

Eelnoraa - As mentioned in earlier posts, I think the shop in question were taking advantage of a new diver (me) who had a little knowledge (always a dangerous thing). They had that wing in stock (no smaller ones) so decided to sell it (I could even have ended up with a larger 40kg wing had I not been as insistent that I didn't need dual bladders!).

Neil,
I would look at either an IST dolphin single tank wing, Frog Indigo single tank wing, or if you can find a used Halcyon Eclipse. As others have said, something in the 30-40lb range as opposed to 27kg. For reference, in a twinset and 2 stages, I use a 40lb halcyon explorer and it's plenty of lift.

@Neilwood I sympathise with your predicament. As @rivers states above look at the frog. I have one myself although I don't use it as I prefer the psychological effect of havign a bigger wing on the surface. I use a Dive rite voyager which is 36 lbs life with my 15l steel.

I would also suggest giving Apex a call - I used to have a WTX wing - when I wanted a replacement I couldn't get one here they come in 30 or 40. Have a chat - find a dealer and take your harness etc and go visit touch and play.

Finally your 14kg is way too much - with my 7mm and a 4mm hood (only have 12 dives on it) I would only have 5kg. Go get a buddy and get a weight check starting at 50bar on a safety stop with only a little air in your wing. Then with your buddy see what you weight you need at 20 bar holding a stop at 5m.

Good luck
