I do own Mares and ScubaPro. I keep my Mares home when I go diving. It is a metal regulator. Is true, no more dry mouth, when I dive face up the water is leaking inside... Sent it for service, they said is normal... Is like they say: "Just add water... and start leaking"

Same story with me. Sorry I can't remember the model of the Mares, but they never worked well for me. I had problems with them free flowing when they were brand new, had to take them in for adjustment. Then they'd flutter when inhaling and I felt like I was getting water in my mouth. Had trouble finding a place to service them. Since I've purchased Atomic and ScubaPro and have been very happy with both.

Go for the Mares Abyss 42. You can't get a better reg. I dive a Mares Abyss 22 and I have never had any problem with it ever. I have dove it from the Caribbean to the ice cold Great Lakes.

......I've never owned/dove Scubapros...but do own/dive a couple of 'older' model Mares (Ruby and MR16 Voltrex) and both have been fine / highly reliable regs, and always dry breathers....so no complaints.

I own a handful of Apeks regs that I like, so it makes no sense in my case to switch.

But if I were starting from scratch I would look long and hard at the Scubapro MK17/G250V. A dive buddy had the MK25/S600s but had one too many freeflows in cold water and bought the MK17/G250Vs which he has been totally happy with. You don't say where you are from, if you only dive someplace tropical the MK25/S600 might be a great fit.

Thanks for all your input.
Finally I went for the Scubapro MK25/S600 as I do tropical diving only. Can't wait for my trip to the Philippines next week to try it out.

What model? I have a Proton, and I can dive it in any position without leaks.

I have Proton Metal as second stage and V16 for first stage. My friend dive Abyss, complain about same issues. I switch to SP mk25/s600 and I'm happy (i dive in tropical waters only).

I did pair the Proton Metal with mk25/s600 for tests and the experience was exactly the same. Even r395 second stage seems better.

I just saw my reply came after you made your choice, but I'll leave it here for others...

NOT Mares! I've been to certification classes for both, serviced both many years, dived both. I especially dislike Mares for destroying Dacor's parts availability, but I'm not that impressed with their stuff anyway, particularly as far as value goes. I dive ScubaPro's older models now (mostly), but there are plenty of regs that have excellent performance that just don't advertise SO MUCH as Mares and ScubaPro! Consider offerings from Zeagle, Oceanic, Aqualung, Atomic, Apeks, Genesis for example. BTW, I wouldn't trust an "unbiased review" from any magazine that takes big advertising bucks from the contestants. And the size and quantities of the ads do not affect the REAL quality of the reg- it ain't necessarily great just because they say it is! My advice is to save some money on the reg- you are mostly paying for advertising. If you have to have one of the two selections, get the SP.
