I will probably be doing most of my diving above 55 degrees, so relatively warm waters.

55 is relatively warm water? ;)

I've used an Aqualung Titan and it was a pretty good reg. I also have a Scubapro S550 and Mk16, which I love. I think you would probably be happy with either Aqualung or Scubapro.

In Vancouver I think one or two shops of 10 have SP, this may have to do with very cold water at some times of the year and most SP being piston regs or the SP distribution network. Aqualung is more prevalent. I believe Aqualung is as easily serviced as SP all over the world. Go with the best deal I like Aqualung.

I have two dive buddies I dive with regularly, one uses an aqualung legend he bought about 4 years ago the other uses a multitude of scubapro, poseidon and a few US Divers (now aqualung) I have had the aqualung serviced for my friend because it is very hard to find an aqualung tech anywhere near where I'm at. 5 dives after having it serviced it freeflowed 5 minutes into the dive and dumped a tank of air at 100ft quickly. When I talked to the reg guy to get it inspected again he thought I was talking about my sherwood when I said it freeflowed and was shocked until he realized I meant the aqualung, which didn't phase him at all. No one I've talked to is surprised by the problems my buddy has had.
Buddy number 2 though has never had a problem with any of his scubapros and loves them. He dives them regularly and hard and they perform flawlessly.
This is just what I've noticed.

Well, I am amazed... sounds like they failed to change the high pressure seat seal or they did not adjust the IP correctly. It's not the reg's fault when someone cuts corners. It's also not surprising for the technician to "blame the reg" when his work is shoddy. You don't think HE is going to assume any blame for this do you?

You shouldn't have any problem finding a AL dealer to service your reg any where in the world.

Doc is right as far as the freeflowing reg...you dont' expect 98% of shop tech to say "oh, yeah, i was a bit hung over when i overhauled your reg, was wondering what that spare "o" ring was for" do you?

strider what did that shop tech do for your friend? redo the overhaul? next time you or your friend bring a reg there for service, ask them to check the IP before they take it out of your sight and then when they bring it back, and have them leave the guage attached for a few mins...cycle the purge a few times and look to see if it creeps. it should lock up tight each time. <also ask them what the IP spec is before they put a gauge on it>

quick field test to see if the IP is set right <this doesn't work on most pneumatics sadly>, charge the system, purge 2-3x then let it sit for a few mins...if the pressure goes above <160ish> for most 2nd stages it will start to hiss.

Well, if you are looking at the AQ Legend LX, and the SP S600/ MK25, and you are going to be doing warm water diving, I would say, go with whichever one you like. They are both great regs, and will give you good service for a long time.

How about Titan LX vs Scubapro Mk2/R390?

How about Titan LX vs Scubapro Mk2/R390?

I dont think that is a valid comparison. The Titan LX is a balanced diaphragm reg, and the MK2 is an unbalanced piston (the Titan LX is a better reg, hands down). If you want a cheap reg that you dont use that often, for recreational depths, then go with the MK2. If you are a recreational diver, and want a nice reg, then go with the Titan LX.

But, comparing these two, is not apples to apples...

A better comparison would be the Calypso to the MK2. Then, you have two unbalanced piston regs from two different manufacturers. They are fine for rental regs, or shallow rec diving.

Ok, thanks a lot Lubold. The thing is that down here where I live (Venezuela) I can get either one for the same price, therefore I was wondering if there was anything special about the Scubapro that could bulk the price in my LDS down here. My instructors down here all vouch for the Scubapro, they say it´s reliable, a "workhorse" and easy to service, but having read all specs about the Aqua Lung I couldn´t quite figure out why they would disregard the Titan up front. My guess is they haven´t tried it or they just don´t know the regulator at all. I´m an aspiring divemaster an photographer and I want something good in that price range (The Titan´s)

Thats the thing with Scubapro fans. They have blind allegiance, and cant objectively compare anything to a Scubapro. They are always going to say that the SP is better or the right choice.

That being said, if you can get them both for the same price, and you say that you are an aspiring divemaster, I would definitely get the Titan LX, if I were you. However, keep in mind that whichever shop you plan on DM'ing for will likely want you to dive the gear they sell.
