I checked my G250HP I bought, I can not get the purge button to twist and lock. Not sure if they made different versions of this reg.
 
On the S600 (little brother of the G250HP) the two versions differ externally on the size of the cracking pressure adjustment knob. It looks like that knob is a somewhat larger diameter on the older versions. I only have older versions of the S600 and the knob is just a little under 1 inch in diameter.

One of my dive buddies had the S600. He had it free flow 4 times in a row (before and after servicing). On the some of those dives I was with him using a 250V with no problems (we both use MK17 for the water temp and less than clear lake water). He switched to a G250V and has not had any more problems....other than diving with me :wink:

That is not a general model problem. It is a tuning problem that any good tech should have no problem fixing. I have almost no freeflow problems with any of the almost 20 scubapro 2nd stages I dive or support for my wife and one daughter. That includes 2 S600 and a G500.
