A few SBers from the chat room got together last weekend to dive in Key Largo and work with the Coral Restoration group. Mselenaous helped organize a great class with the group at Coral Restoration Foundation for all of us. We spent about 2-3 hours in the classroom at CRF headquarters located at the Pilot House Marina.
During the class, Kayla from CRF explained all about coral biology and how it got in its current condition, how the nursery works, and how to tag/ plant the baby corals. Did you know that most of this work has been done by volunteer divers just like us of all experience and training levels.

After learning the correct procedures to handle the coral, the group went out with Horizon Divers to do their first dive on the Coral Nursery near Snapper Ledge. It is the largest such nursery in the world. It was amazing seeing all the young coral hanging from all the PVC trees. The group tagged the small coral pieces in order to get them ready for planting on the second dive
On the second dive, the group actually went out and planted the coral on Molasses Reef. Using hammers, we cleaned off algae areas on the reef to put the coral pieces . We used marine epoxy to adhere the coral to the reef. The fun part was dodging the fire coral. After planting 40 new staghorn corals, it was time to head back to the boat.

Thanks for all the SBers who came from near and far (as far as NY, SoCal, MN, & PR) that participated in the dive: Froid, Annika1, beaner, Boriqua, Kaptain Sparrow, Mermage, mermaid0sea, 1bubbleoff, Thez yo and of course Netdoc and Mselenaous.
Thanks to all the staff at Horizon Divers, Captain Stephanie, Captain Troy, Raisa, and Kara. They were a fantastic crew and made the trip out and back a blast.
And a special thanks to the Staff at the Coral Restoration Foundation, Kayla, Adam, Patrick and Jessica. It was so much fun, we will be back to see how our "babies" are growing and to help plant more corals.
