Just for clarification, we do allow a large variety of items to be bought at the show. There are a few items that cannot be bought and carried from the show floor and this is done to protect the safety of each individual diver. Most of the manufacturers and retailers agree that items such as BC's and regulators should only be distributed though a learning facility where a variety of self-regulated safety checks can occur (Verification of a c-card, etc.). We want to promote safety in our sport and would hate to hear of a non-qualified diver walking out of our show with an item they are not properly trained to use.

This is done not only at our show, but at all the other consumer shows across the country.

We hope to see you at our show, we have a wide variety of exhibitors, seminars and films for any diver to enjoy.

Scuba Show 2009 - May 30th & 31st @ The Long Beach Convention Center

While I like going to the show, I find it difficult to understand why a seller's ability to check a divers C-card is some how compromised being at a trade show.

Besides, if a non-certified diver want's gear, all they have to do is shop online.

There are also a large number of siminars presented on some really good topics. My wife really liked the siminar on travel safety last year and I learned a lot from the underwater photography siminar.

I do agree that a large portion of the booths are travel agencies, resorts or dive locations, but you can filter those out if that is not what you are looking for. You can run the main floor in less than eight hours and still see everything.

Yes, there is the occational cool new SCUBA item presented or displayed.

I also go because a number for the local diving organizations like the Catalina Conservancy Divers or the chamber volunteers from Wriggley are there. I might even get to meet Dr. Bill for once. You never know.

I'll probably be working the chamber booth one or likely both days, feel free to stop by and say hello.

We actually LIKE talking to divers that aren't lying on their backs on a stretcher once in a while. :D

............where a variety of self-regulated safety checks can occur (Verification of a c-card, etc.).

I agree with Teamcasa. How can a purchase be deemed "not safe" if you can show proper verification at the show. Also, as Teamcasa pointed out there is no c-card for online purchases. It seems to me to be a way to get divers to the shop for greater retail sales. Could you please expalin why you feel you must enforce these rules; your justification for these rules are NOT valid. If I may be blunt, sorry if I offend anyone. Tell us the real reason why you have the divers buy from the shop. SAFETY IS NOT THE ISSUE and Teamcasa has pointed that out. If safety was the issue then you would have a verification sheet that would list all the requirements in order to purchase and take gear from the floor, this would be online so you could bring the required verification. There is no sheet! You don't even offer that as an option! It's a bait and switch tatic that rubs me the wrong way. Even if I have all the verification that I have been fully trainined in a particular piece of gear you still will not sell it off the floor, WHY????? Safety........BS. It NOT safety, because there are many options to properly verify training and sell off the floor but you chose not to. Please cut through all the crap and give us the real reason. I DO NOT BUY YOUR LOGIC!! Please advise and explain. So sorry to those offended but this hits a nerve on me.:crafty:

Eric,

We understand your frustration about this topic and thank you for your feedback about The SCUBA Show.

As an instructor, you know how important safety is in our sport. That is why we support the self-regulated safety controls that the manufacturers and dive stores have agreed upon. Safety is a big concern with us at The SCUBA Show, that is why you will see many seminars regarding diver safety, and our overall support of the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.

You are more than welcome to discuss this, and any other concerns you may have by contacting us directly.

I was told by an employee of one of the partcipating shops that they can't sell certain items because they do not want a biding war going on. Also that if forces people to visit the shops in hopes that they will sigh up for more classes, buy more stuff and trying to gain them as a long term customer.

not to sound like a smart a** but why do you claim to be the largest consumer show?? BTS typically has more exhibitors (this year was still over 300) , more workshops and seminars, and runs for a longer time?? The main exhibition hall is about the same size as the one you use, and has signficant additional seminar space directy off the main hall.
