I'm getting a new reg and have narrowed it down to Atomic B2, Scuba Pro MK25/S600 and Scuba Pro MK25/X650. What's really the difference between the S600 and X650 second stages. I'm willing to spend up to $900.00 for it. I'm AOW and dive mostly warm water climates. I'm planning on making about 50 to 60 dives a year. I'm planning on getting nitrox and maybe cave certs this april. I would appreciate all input.

I would think any one of those would do fine for you. I have an Atomic and it breathes really well but ScubaPro regs are great also. You might get a better response if you tell what type of diving you plan on doing with it.

I'd recommend the newer Scubapro MK17 and the older D400 if you can find a good one. If not, then I'd go with the MK17/S600. If you must have a piston reg with swivel, then the MK25/D400 or MK25/S600 is great.

The X650 design is based on the older D300/350/400, but there have been some minor design issues with it. I sold my X650 after giving it a try for several dives. Do a search, and DA Aquamaster can tell you everything you need to know.

I just switched over from the MK25 to the MK17, and love it. My standard reg set is the MK17/D400. You are on the right track regardless, because your choices are bullet-proof and reliable. You can get Scubapro regs serviced almost anywhere you travel.

Hope this helps.

I just went through the same comparison between the Atomic B2 and the Scubapro regs. Decided on the Atomic based on the swivel hose, titanium 2nd stage, and 2 year or 300 dive service interval. Doubt if I'll get more than 20-30 dives per year so the required annual service for the Scubapro would be an unnecessary expense.

Per Atomic's warranty: "[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Limited lifetime warranty not contingent upon annual servicing." :crafty:

It really is a toss-up as they both make high quality products.

Right on about the MK17 and the older D400, Other than that I'd suggest looking for a used MK10/G200 or even a MK10/R190 setup, Parts and serviceability for any of those mentioned are really a non-issue
I've got a set of MK17/R190/G200 and a set of MK10/R190 for 2 sets of doubles.

Not really. While it is styled to look somewhat like them, it is a totally new design, using a completely different valve that has more in common with all the other current SP 2nds than it does with the amazing old coaxial valve used in the D-series. But, as you point out, there have been a lot of issues with it.

I, too, would suggest the MK17 rather than the MK25...If you find yourself diving locally down the road, the sealed MK17 will be better suited for our cold-water conditions. I have three sets of MK17/S600 regulators and one MK25/S600...they breathe similarly.

...and a MK17/S600 is a whole lot cheaper (roughly $265.00 for the first stage & $300 for the second) than a MK25/S600 configuration.

SP parts are found more easily in remote places, I am told.

The kits for service are less, I think.

I'm sure any of these regs will work great for you, but you might look into the rumors that scubapro is re-issuing the old style G250 with a metal air barrel. The older style G250 is often preferred over the newer G250hp by experienced divers, and either the G250 or G250hp is often preferred over either the S600 or X650, even though it's cheaper. As others have suggested, the D400, which you can only find used, is considered maybe SP's best performing 2nd stage, although I really like my old G250.

Regarding the MK17, it sure is getting great reviews, but the MK25 is also a tried and true high performance reg, and has the swivel which may or may not be important to you. If you were diving in really cold water, like sub-40F, then you might start to think about freezing issues.
