Memorial Day through Labor Day this year, and I made absolutely no dives! (I've been preoccupied with a new pastime. Actually, I resurrected a very old pastime.) First such drought since I became certified (in 1987). What should be my penance?

Shall be disclosing what this new pastime is...
What could possibly usurp SCUBA?

Give me all your gear, and ye shall be forgiven. Go in peace.

The punishment is in this sin, think of all the awesome diving you missed!
I will take a guess at your new past time: Serving community Service Sentence for misdemeanor charge of diving while wearing Creature from Black Lagoon suit on Family Beach Day.

Wow that’s specific.

Involves pulling a trigger, hearing a *bang*, and holing a piece of paper (hopefully). I was overdue to teach my three teenage daughters handgun operation and safety. I had to remember first, as it had been awhile for me (since the early 1970's, when my dad was stationed at Ft Hood). Hoping now to introduce them to skeet, trap, and sporting clays--once I've really learned, myself.

I've been fortunate that several of my other previous obsessions (e.g., camping, darkroom photography, even sports cars) have fit nicely with diving. Of course, some haven't (e.g., bicycling). This probably is another that won't--unless I am thinking about this all wrong.

My daughter asked for us to take shooting lessons and gun safety course, and while I am no wild-eyed musket-clutcher, I did take ROTC marksmanship in college, back when it was still allowed.

But still, gun safety consciousness will pay off when all our daughters get into SCUBA spearfishing!

Yes, I agree, absolutely: Trigger discipline, muzzle discipline, the four basic safety rules--they all apply to spearfishing, don't they?! (I don't spearfish, so this didn't occur to me.) Thanks!

Thou shalt mentor as many (fairly new) divers to a higher skill level as it takes for you to rediscover your joy in it by witnessing and experiencing theirs.
