I tried in waterproof h1 hoods and ordered the h2 in the size that fits. It seems to fit differently so I ordered a smaller one. Now I’m torn between the medium and small. My head is about 56.5/57cm which is right in the “small” category but I guess the hood feels very tight around my face.

The medium is fine around my face and top of the head but has gaps near the base of my head and the neck is quite loose. Not sure what to do.

Go with the medium. Tuck the neck into your suit to reduce flushing.

I wouldn't go with a smaller one if it's squashing your face but it's up to you. Maybe try a different brand or get the bibbed hood.

60s should be fine with a little water intrusion.

H2 is relatively new on market. 'Bet that there are plenty of H1 hoods (in the size that fits you), still on dealer shelves. Just call to confirm 'have in stock, when you find on google search. (Might even ask dealer you got current hood from, if they have any H1's left.)

Nothing fits me so I get stuff tailor made and or adjusted
and if your gear is not right, it is not right, nor will you be

A poorly fitting hood will be a constant annoyance. Keep trying others until you find one that you are happy with. Brand loyalty should never trump fit/comfort
I’m not sure either fit “poorly” I just have no way to tell if it’s fitting correctly. I have no frame of reference
