Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forums and scuba diving altogether. I start my scuba diving class next Monday and for a prerequisite we have to be able to swim 200 yards unassisted, so im assuming we're going to do that the first class. I didn't do swimming in high school but did many other sports so i dont know how long or difficult 20 yards swimming is. Would anyone be able to help me out in telling me how easy swimming 200 yards is?

Thanks in advance.

I find it very easy but I know how to swim. 200 yards is the pool is a walk in the park compared to swimming in scuba in a current on a winter day.

Just relax, don't try to do it fast and burn yourself out.

in my class we had to swim 8 length but there is no time limit so if you get winded as i did just rool on your back and float alittle to catch your breth. as long as you dont give up you will pass.

You really have to get to a pool and try it out.

I had to swim 350 yards in 10 minutes. I tried two months before the course and found that I could barely do 50 yards. Over the next two months I swam at least twice a week and asked the lifeguards for pointers. I finished first in my class, but only because I practiced until I could do it, then practiced more.

Actually, more "lap" pools are what are referred to in the US as "junior olympic" in length. This is 25 yards. The Olympic distance pools are actually 50 meters, but I think you will find very few 25 meter pools in the US.

As to the swimming part, nobody in my OW class had a problem. Everyone was pretty fit, and since I swam in high school this was a breeze for me. That said, the advice to find a pool and swim some laps is a really good idea if you can swing it.

My gf had the same worries. She has no swimming ability. 200 yards is not a long way since there is no time limit and you can use any stroke/combination of strokes. Get on your back and do a nice easy backstroke. Take your time. I have seen people have trouble on their float because they burned themselves out on the swim.

In Canada at least I believe that a "length" is the length of a pool (about 25 yards in most cases) and a "lap" is "there-and-back"; that is twice the length (about 50 yards in most cases).
