A marine conservation student died “doing something she loved” while scuba diving off the coast of Dorset, her family have said.

Emily Sherwin, 20, is feared to have drowned following a dive off Old Harry Rocks near Swanage at 6pm on Tuesday.

Her disappearance prompted a huge 24-hour air and sea search involving the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), coastguards, police dive teams and helicopters.

More than 30 boats from Parkstone Yacht Club, where Sherwin had worked, also joined in the search.

But despite their best efforts, including multiple dives in the area where she vanished, Sherwin was not found

Dive search has ceased

The search operation involved two coastguard helicopters, lifeboats from Swanage, Poole and Yarmouth, and Swanage and Poole coastguards, as well as a police dive team from Avon and Somerset Police.

Det Chief Insp Rachel Vallins of Dorset Police said: “Officers are continuing to keep the family fully updated and our thoughts are with all of Emily’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

🙏 🙏 prayers for her and her family

I dived Old Harry Rocks in August 2013 as a drift dive. Maximum depth was only 14 metres and it was a very simple dive. Wish we had some more information about what happened.
