Hello everyone!
i'm new to this forum and scuba diving idea!
I found 2 schools new my house one is Adventure Scuba
1737 York Avenue and Empire Divers in NYC. Don't know which one to choose. If someone from UES can recommend a good shop - I appreciate it. Location is not a priority - but in NYC.
I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate through the forum. So if thats already sticky - pls point it out.
Thanks!

I would visit both, like an interview. See what they sell, quality of the store, discounts on equipment and further training etc. If one has an on-site pool and the other does not, I would go with the facility with the pool.

I have access to an onsite heated pool about 15/20 minutes from NYC-closer if you are in the Bronx(which is part of NYC).I am located in Yonkers.I can work whatever schedule you need.PM if interested for my cell and costs. There are NO facilities in NYC that have an onsite pool we are the closest ones that do.

Depending on how close to NYC is a priority- Scuba New York in Yonkers has an on-site pool for the confined water sessions.

If the five boroughs is the make or break, check out Pan Aqua on W. 43rd.

Feel free to PM me if you would like more details.

Good luck in your search and Welcome to the Board and to diving!

thanks for you replies! but because of my schedule i probably will stick with a school in the City. Especially i don't think that price will make such a big difference to take subway and kill 2 hours on the train roundtip:-( unless its free:blinking:
you are right about pool on premises! when i called they didn't say anything about a pool. So Empire has pool on 14th street:-( not on UES.
i called Pan Aqua. they all in the same price range - about 300 hundred total (inc book, manual, log, dvd) but this one has pool at the same location! will check them out first!

Panaqua uses a pool immediately next to their shop on 43rd st. Very nice crew and your "standard" PADI certification. I would recommend to take their "long" course that runs over 4 weeks (once a week only ...) to give you time to absorb, study etc. I did my confined water work there and did my referral certification dives on a Caribbean vacation.

There is a shop on Upper East Side across from Asphalt Green as well. They use the pool at Asphalt Green for their training. Can't remember their name, but remember they sounded ok when I spoke to them prior to my OW training.

Adventure Scuba has a pool directly across the street at Asphalt Green.
Pan Aqua has a pool right next door at Manhattan Plaza.

It's really about who you get get as an instructor. I teach at Adventure Scuba but hang out at Pan Aqua so I feel pretty un biased.

For OW they are pretty much the same.

The instructors at PA are all full time instructors (retail at the store is their day job) but the classes are much larger.

AS instructors all have day jobs and mostly teach for personal reasons and not financial. The class sizes are rarely more than two or three people.
