The UKs fatality total is currently up to the total of all of last year and its only April.

any ideas as to why?

None at all. Nothing unusual about the incidents, nothing unusual about the weather. Pure bad luck at the moment it seems.

There's been a couple of incidents here in Ireland too and it seems very early in the year for it. A diver died off Kerry recently, and at the weekend, some divers who drifted away off Malin Head in Donegal were rescued. Those incidents were reported in the national paper - usually you never read anything about diving in it and twice already this year.

Could it just be a numbers game? How many people a year get certified? As more people get certified, the more people there is to suffer a tragic death. I cant see water getting more dangerous.

Stats here are divided but it seems general diving numbers are decreasing although some agencies are saying a slight increase of certified divers. All in all, cut through the claims and counter claims and it seems the numbers game isnt a factor as its fairly common.

Although the water may not get more dangerous you could have weather & sea conditions worse than normal for the time of year or existing divers pushing their limits too early in the season.

Or as i suspect its just bad luck.
