I'm a Fish!
Hey all,

I'm new to the scuba world and these forums so I thought I'd introduce myself. My wife and I live in Aurora. She has been certified for about 10 years with me just being certified OW this past weekend in Playa del Carmen. We are hooked beyond recognition and there is no turning back.

Couple of questions for everyone. Are there any Scuba clubs in the Colorado area that get together monthly to discuss Scuba topics (best practices, trips, safety, etc.)? If not I think it would be a great idea to get one together. We could all meet at a neutral location or alternate houses and make it a diner event also.

I also read in the past about an underwater poker event. People actually play poker underwater in one of the local pools to work on boyancy and gas consumption. Anyone hear of that?

I look forward to meeting you all.

Brad

Welcome to Scubaboard Brad!
There is a link to local dive club forums at the top of the Rocky Mountain Oyster forum. Here is a link to the one in Denver. I think the FROGS are in Colorado Springs.
There was a lengthy thread about Underwater Uno a while back, they talked a little about poker. I've never heard of a game around here though.

Welcome to the addiction!!

Welcome Brad. Sean gave you the link to Shark Bait, but if you tune in here you will get to know who is diving locally and when. Aurora Res opens for diving in May. Many of the RMO's go to Blue Hole this time of year and Chatfield (Kingfisher Pond)is open to diving when the ice melts. We will also dive the mountain lakes in the summer. Aurora and Chatfield are not all that great(OK not even good), but they're close.
Ask any question you like, from equipment to technique, we're pretty friendly here at RMO.

As far as Poker goes, I believe it was an underwater poker run. Namely, they dropped markers underwater that had compass readings on them each with a bag of poker cards. Once you found all 5 bouys you brought the cards back and the best hand won. Its a navigation exercise.

As far a clubs go, the Shark Bait Dive Club meets monthly up at various locations in Lakewood.

Thanks for all the information guys. I really look forward to doing some lake diving this year with you all.

Poker navigation exercise sounds like it was a bunch of fun. Good idea. How deep are most of the lakes here in Colorado, about 30'? Or am I way off?

Welcome have fun on the Boards.

Brad-

High Plains Scuba in Fort Collins does an Underwater Poker Tourney once a year for a fundraiser. It doesn't really work on buoyancy but its lots of fun. :)

I played in that, it was a lot of fun and a good cause although I didn't make it to the final day.
I have also heard of people playing games underwater, but not locally. if we can find a local spot that has decent enough vis, I would be willing to try some underwater games, although sitting at a table in ten feet of water in a controlled environment was hard enough. I can't imagine how hard it would be to play cards at the bottom of Aurora Res...

WE had a underwater texas holding game here in the keys last summer, it was a blast, but the cards don't last long we went through 5 decks in about a hour
