I am going to Kura Hulanda in Curacao on the 18th, will be flying Air Jamaica from JFK. I was looking at baggage requirements and noticed that they charge $50 for scuba gear, can any body confirm or deny that? Any problem with insects this time of year? Thanks.

all airlines say they charge extra for scuba gear - some old stupid thing about people traveling with tanks. Don't worry about it.

We have been traveling for 8+ years all around the world with scuba gear (no tanks) and never had an extra charge, even when we tell the clerk at check-in that bags are full of scuba gear. All they really care about it is the weight of the bag and to make sure it isn't too large. :D

I've never had a problem before but this is my first time flying Air Jamaica, thanks for your reply robint.

Just flew Air Jamaica from JFK a couple of weeks ago with plenty of scuba gear -- no extra charges. You'll be fine.

I have always followed the don't ask don't tell policy when it comes to this subject. If they ask I don't tell! The only reason they ask is so they can charge you more. If they ask I say no.

They have never cared about scuba gear for us. On the other hand we carry regs and cameras, so is the packed stuff scuba or snorkel gear? hard to say. BUT, watch out for overweight charges. They do check for that.

Sunshine...we need to have those mosquitoes gone sometime over the next two weeks, see what you can do, okay?

Thanks for all your input, one more question, beside a carry on can you take a camera bag also? And yes Sunshine do something about the mosquitoes.

Our 3 carry-ons for 2 people: we always carry a camera bag with camera and camcorder and attachments, a backpack with laptop and accessories, and a bag with regulators, swimsuits, and dive logs. The camera bag in medium sized and counts as my hubby's personal bag. Sometimes I take a personal bag also, just a large totebag full of reading material, plane pillows, misc stuff. Never had any problems with it. :D

Do be aware of the weight charges with your checked bags though. On our way back from Hawaii, they had scales set up right by the check-in counter for everyone to use. We had to reorganize our bags as one was several lbs. over. We just made weight on both.

Mosquitoes be gone. We're getting low on Deet, I just wear long pants at night.
Trust me I would ban them for you if I could. We've had a bit of rain every couple of days (short spurts but a few heavy showers) accompanied by fantastic lightning and LOUD thunderstorms. We are hoping the rains are gone for a while. I'll do my best to have it clear by the 18th, just in time for a coral spawning dive. See you next week!

PS If you read any gossip mags on the plane like People or a current Newsweek or Time, bring them to Westpunt. I still receive Entertainment Weekly but without any concept of dates. Last week I got an issue from August, this week one from April. We had a guest in August who brought down a dozen People mags and great coffee!
