Not too long ago, I thought I read in a post that someone had managed to get all of their scuba gear into carry-on luggage somehow.

Anyone have any positive experience with this?

I just got back from a trip to Jamaica. I have a rather large back pack style scuba bag. It weighed about 30 to 35 pounds. Worked great.

Here is what I had in it:

1. Zeagle DSIV reg.
2. Zeagle Escape BC.
3. Suunto retractable compass.
4. 3mm wet suit.
5. Split fins.
6. Mask
7. Primary, 2 back up, and locator light.
8. Wrist computer with manual.
9. Nickon Coolpix digital camera and seperate housing.
10. Save a dive kit.
11. Spare batteries for the lights.
12. Dive log.

Basically, everything except the weights and tank. Fit fine in the overhead and walking around the airport and going through security was not a problem.

I guess you can't bring a knife.

Put my knife and multi-tool in my checked bags, forgot to mention that.

Great
Thanks for the feedback.

Do you know bag you use?

I am mostly concerned about my fins (A Quattros), which seem to be the limiting factor for any of my packing systems (in terms of length), though my BC is not the epitome of portability either (Seaquest Black Diamond).

The bag is a SeaPro. Bought a bunch of gear on ebay while searching for a backpack bag. I suggest you do the same search, there are a lot of choices and decent prices on ebay. This one has no wheels and is all canvas or cordura, not a material specialist, so....

I recommend you go to the TSA website....do a search on scuba gear...and print off the written rules. Obvious things like knives...spearguns and the like are a no go. Everything else you can carry on. PRINT that sheet off and have it with you.

Now, note....you can not take a pony bottle according to the sheet. It is not suppose to matter whether it is drained and no valve or not. I called TSA three times and talked to them. NO bottles of any kind on flights. SUcks!

I have had trouble in the past carrying on my regulator. The security person told me that it could be considered a blunt object, and I had to go back downstairs, find my bag and pack the reg in it.

Since the rules of what we can and cannot take has come up repeatedly, I created a thread to help out the travellers see Transportation Regulations

I regularly travel with my regs, computer as carry on -- at least going to the destination. On the way back just the computer is carry on.

I'm usually changing at least once if not twice, and just prefer to be able to "run" for my connections without carrying a whole lot of stuff. Haven't had any problems yet. Well not going on a holiday, my luggage has been late coming home though :D
