I'm considering a GoPro camera to record videos of hull cleaning operations to post on my web site. Which Hero model do I want? I'll need it to be mounted on my melon. Is a helmet mount the way to go (rather not if I can avoid it) or are divers doing it another way?

Correct, just the head strap. I wear it over my hood. Just stick it there and enjoy the dive. I got the helmet hero because of the assortment of mounting option for all my various sporting helmets. For non helmeted activities I just use the head strap. My friend just got the motorsports hero for mounting it on his car. We both love the cameras.

Yeah, I'm prepared for that and thanks for the links. I figured I will likely need a housing upgrade. But we'll see how this thing works by as-is first.

for hull cleaning the std package is ok. get a little plastic camping mirror, cut it down, put a wrist strap on it and tuck it into your glove. you will need it to check to see if unit on lite is lit. bummping unit on hull can turn unit off as we noted on a back roll entry .:( then how would you know its off? mirror solved that mystery. now you can check the on lite w/unit on your head w/out a buddy.
