Try to always dive on the incoming or the slack tide. Timing is everything. Keep in mind the tides/currents don't always act the same way in the same place all of the time. Also current strengh can vary from the surface to the bottom. You did well to try both. Sometime you just have to go with the flow in which case you just have to hope for the best. Glad it ended well for you and your son.
 
Where I dive in S Cal we don't have strong tidal currents, but 5 foot vis is not uncommon and while I don't like it I don't call a dive at that vis.

Very interesting. I would never have thought Back beach could get like that. Ever.

Yeah, I have always had pool like conditions there with the exception of a little current our far. Must have been some serious tidal exchange taking place and they were right in the "middle" of it.

We'd be calling dives all the time in RI if 5' vis was a reason too! This year its be pretty good last summmer was awful 5' vis was about all we could expect.
