So far, the majority of my diving was done in the Carribean. Water is much too cold up here in Canada !!!!

During one dive, at about 15 metres down, a scarry thought went thru my mind.

What if a fishing boat happens to drive above the group, and one of the lines gets hold of one of the divers ????

 These guys reel in 10 foot swordfish ...!!!!!

Think about that before you go to bed tonite !!!:rofl3:

Do you find yourself diving amongst large schools of swordfish very often?

Yes but, by the time you figure out what the h**l is happening, take your knife out of the holster, what damage would the tripod hook would have done to your body !!!

if you get hooked by a large hook like that, I am sure there will be more to worry about....either way, the chances of that happening are slim, after all when you dive in an area where there might be large fish, you will be diving off a boat, most dive boats will the flying flags and warning other boats of divers in the water....I doubt a fisherman's hook is going to get you or even get close to you if they obey the dive flag rules

Brings up a good point...
There's a 200-300ft. 'give way' rule to a flown dive flag for other boats (depending on the waterway). We were on a dive boat that pulled up to a planned reef dive site, for a night dive, and already anchored was a large Boston Whaler with three or four hooks in the water...

The thought of swimming through a small gauntlet of large hooks, at night, wasn't thrilling anyone. However, the fishing boat decided to detach from the mooring, and take off (perhaps because they knew we might spook the bigger game anyway).

We had moored within 100ft. of the fishing boat... Does anyone know what the call should have been (who is supposed to give way). Should we have given the fishing boat space?

I remember the bit in The Perfect Storm (book) where a guy baiting the longline had a lapse in concentration for a moment and let the hook impale his hand. He soon found himself 20 feet or so below the surface dressed in foul weather gear and boots. Not a dive I would like to try.

I think we're approaching the chances of getting struck by lightning. This is especially true if you are diving from shore, near a boat or near a float.

I can't speak to your local fishing methods but what Ive seen I don't worry. Having good cutting tools, paying attention to sounds and what's on the water pre dive improve your odds even more.

I agree the fishhooks would ruin a dive real fast. That’s why I carry a line cutter.

But here is one for you to think about: I nearly got caught on a 3 foot rock anchor that was being dragged through the water when a boat broke loose.

 Just got back from the gym and I am amazed that so far nobody mentionned I.S.S. !!!
